Hey folks...got a $75 gift card to Bass Pro Shops for Christmas from my cousin, and have decided to use it on a nice, solid multitool...soooooo, here comes the obvious question: Leatherman, Gerber, or SOG? Don't wanna go above $100 (would require too much out-of-pocket $$ from me), so what should I be looking at? Thanks!

Don't have search option, but will meander my way over to that forum...if someone could please move this thread that would be greatly appreciated ;)

hihihi, same old question!:D
do you prefer spydie or bench?
you could have same question for leatherman or Victorinox....;)
I personnaly prefer the Swisstool spirit plus...

Each person has different uses and preferences for a multi-tool. You can get a lot of info on them and everyone thinks that the one that they prefer is the best.

You might go to the store and see if you can handle several of them and compare for yourself. There is no shortage of excellent multi-tools on the market and one should have no problem finding the one that is right for them.

Everyone will disagree, but if you look at Leatherman, Victorinox, and SOG, each had several different models to choose from. Gerber has several models and many people like them. To each his own!

Take a look at the LM Wave. It's a great multi tool and you should have enough left for a bag of beef jerky:)

None of the above.

Victorinox Swisstool Spirit.

YES. Just got one (finally) but have played with them at work for years. Love them to death. My manager has carried one a long time and used it for anything and everything. Not to deal spot, but check amazon right now. They must be on clearance or something!

I have a Swisstool and love it. I would make sure whatever tool you get has the tools you want and will use, many say they have lots of tools but they are mostly just different size flathead screwdrivers, not really much use but an easy and cheap way to pad out the numbers. I also prefer that each tool come out individually and snap into place, one reason I favor Swiss over Leatherman, on many of theirs the tools are held in just by friction, you pull out one and as someone said "all the others come out to say hello".

People seem to like Leatherman, Swisstool, and to a lesser extent Gerbers, haven't heard anyone mention SOG before, for whatever that's worth.

Depends on what your looking for I suppose. I have a brand new LM Juice XE6 that I am very impressed with. It is compact yet has a ton of features. Kind of like a stout SAK (slip joint w/ non-locking tools). For a little more money, the LM Charge AL is very cool. My advice would be to find a place where you can handle the tools before deciding what would work best for you. Let us know what you decide. -DT

They don't carry the Victorinox....I'm looking at the Surge...

Make sure you check out the Charge AL too! Not quite as cumbersome as the Surge but has lots of features. I almost bought one but decided on the Charge TTi instead. Let us know what you decide. -DT

Cumbersome is relative. Even now, as I sit here, a Surge is riding on my belt in a horizontal sheath because, after strapping it on earlier to use on a series of chores, I forgot it was there  . Also, it is manageable clipped to a jeans pocket, so long as you are not stuffing much else into the pocket, including a hand which, if you are working, shouldn't be there, anyway. Even if you are not working, it looks unprofessional. Trades apprentices learn this on day one (if you are not in the trades or military, do as you like with your hands and don't worry about the bad impression you make :p ).

I must admit the Surge is a bit overkill as an everyday "ya never know" kind of carry, for which I prefer something smaller (Charge, Juice). The only real concern I have with it is sharp edges along the handles. I've been meaning to round them off, but haven't got to it yet. Other than that, it's a great tool.
