MultiTool advice sought...

Hi THG,

I've got a few Leatherman tools but I've been EDCing the Blast for about 6 months. Love it and its tools. By the way, I wipe it down with a silicone gun cloth about every 3 weeks - NO RUST!

Happy New Year to all.

I read a pre-sale review by Ron Hood on the LM Wave. He had used it for three months down in South America, and raved about it. I already had a Gerber that I carried. Went to local Sporting goods store and checked out the Wave.
Fit my ahnd better than the Gerber and i like the idea of the blades on the outside better. The sheath was higher quality than the Gerber and the factory edge was top notch.
The Gerber became my car tool on the ride home. I still use it but I carry the LM Wave every day.

Cumbersome is relative. Even now, as I sit here, a Surge is riding on my belt in a horizontal sheath because, after strapping it on earlier to use on a series of chores, I forgot it was there  . Also, it is manageable clipped to a jeans pocket, so long as you are not stuffing much else into the pocket, including a hand which, if you are working, shouldn't be there, anyway. Even if you are not working, it looks unprofessional. Trades apprentices learn this on day one (if you are not in the trades or military, do as you like with your hands and don't worry about the bad impression you make :p ).

I must admit the Surge is a bit overkill as an everyday "ya never know" kind of carry, for which I prefer something smaller (Charge, Juice). The only real concern I have with it is sharp edges along the handles. I've been meaning to round them off, but haven't got to it yet. Other than that, it's a great tool.

To be clear, I have never handled the Surge. Might be an excellent choice. I'm not familiar with that model. I almost bought my dad a Wave for Christmas but opted for a simpler LM Kick because all he really needs are a handy screwdriver set and a pair of pliers for light duty. As an aside, I worked as an electrician's helper and was taught to keep one hand in my pocket when working on a panel (something about avoiding creating a path for the current through the heart or something) but as for the other trades I would guess that the hands in the pockets is a bad idea. No pocket pool on the clock.:D -DT

I have a SOG PowerLock which I love. However If you go for SOG I would pick the PowerAssist, because the normal model is a bit inconvienient to get to the tools.
Happy shopping! haha.
