Multitool versus SAK: opinions wanted

I carry a swisschamp everyday.If I needed a multi,I would enjoy having one.I just don't need pliers very often.

For a year now, I've been carrying my Swisstool Spirit S on my belt. It's compact enough that it isn't distracting. If the sheath rode horizontally, it would be even better. I don't need the pliers very often, but when I do, it's nice to have. More importantly, the Spirit S has a fine set of other tools that I find use for.

I always carry a black Vic Executive SAK in my pocket, too, and have for many years now. It has tools and qualities that my Spirit S does not. I actually use the Executive quite a bit more than my multi-tool. They each have what the other does not.

If I don't carry the Spirit S, I'll carry my alox Soldier along with my Executive.

I own a huge number of SAKs, and quite a number of Leatherman tools as well as an original Swisstool. But of the multis, it's the Spirit S that I will carry on any type of regular basis anymore. But to me, a multi-tool will never completely supplant the SAK. There's something to be said for something that's easily pocketable, and can be pulled out, used, and dropped back into the pocket. I can do that with an SAK more quickly and easily than with any multi-tool. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

For me it depends on what I'm doing. Like PowerDoodle I prefer to edc a sak (cadet or tinker) but if I'm working on a lawn mower or on the house I will carry my original LM PST.

I'll be able to make this comparison soon! I currently have:

-Victorinox SwissTool (original)
-Victorinox Camper
-Victorinox SwissChamp (ruby)
-Buck X-Tract
-Buck BuckTool (2)
-Gerber Legend 800
-Victorinox Centurion

I've owned and given away:

-Leatherman SuperTool
-Victorinox Classic SD (2) and Bought a pink alox for my gf
-Victorinox Super Tinker
-Victorinox SwissChamp (to my little brother, then bought myself another one)

I'm getting a Leatherman Surge for christmas, so i'll report back after christmas.

I EDC a SAk on my belt, and carry a LM Wave in my pack (EDC pack). To me they compliment each other. I find that a SAK works better for me in the woods, and the MT in an urban environment where I am dealing more with manmade items.

If you need tools with knife,go with a multitool. I prefer knives with tools and light weight carry,so i edc SAKs. Never edc my leathermans unless i want to do something plier based. They are not made to compete, but to complement each other.

Well said!! I EDC a LM Charge always, and depending on the day I will either carry a SAK Champ, SOG Powerlock, or a large Sebenza. My SAK Champ is small compared to my LM but sometimes that I get into situations where I simply prefer to use my Champ...it is a great knife!!

I edc a wave on my sheath most days, but some days I carry my skeletool clipped into my pocket.

Depending on what im doing sometimes I don't need to have full pliers so I'll switch to a vic huntsman. It's the best sak for me. I prefer my wave just since it has a good balance of tools and the one hand opening blades make it ideal.

If, like in the movie "Highlander," there can be only one, I'd go with my SAK for EDC. I think it comes down to my general disdain for sheaths where EDC is concerned. I do like the direction Gerber is going with the Crucial and its pocket clip design, though. I think that the Crucial FAST was a big improvement over the original, and if they can go a little further to slim it down, I'd be even more interested.

I use and enjoy both . Off work , plier based tools are much cherished . At work it's usually SAK's , as I'm already rocking Klines .

They complement each other. I like both and switch them out depending on my expectations for the day, special purposes or just because. Usually, when I carry a Leatherman, it is accompanied by a Rambler and when OH Trekker, a Micra.

ATM , I'm rocking a Leatherman MUT , a Mini Champ , with a Tinker Small on the keys . Bases are pretty well covered .

Multi-tool for me, I EDC a LM Charge TTi, it's just too useful to leave at home and the pliers get more than a fair share of the work. I do enjoy SAKs though specifically the 93mm Alox Victorinox variety.
