MultiTools: Tools - How many do you use?

When I had a basic SAK I used both blades, the plain flat screwdriver and the can opener. Never used the saw or the fish-hook punch thingy.

My Leatherman Wave usage was the same - main blade, pliers and occassional screwdriver?

The SAK was therefore (in my mind) better value.

Anyone else out there that does not really use all the tools available? cos I was kinda wondering why "I" have them? ... "cool" status perhaps?

Any Thoughts? Opinions?

When I have carried my Swiss Tool I've used just about every tool on it. Wood saw, metal file, blades, screw drivers, pliers, etc.

I'll throw out the easy answer, better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.

With my Wave I use use every tool but of course some more than others. Here's the order in which they are used from most used to least used.

used often:
--------------
plain blade
pliers
serrated blade
1-2 phillips
scissors
file
saw

used rarely
--------------
large flat head
small flat head
can opener
small phillips

I have a couple, no idea what kind, that live in my hunting pack. No telling how many times they have been used out in the deer stand for various things.

One of those and a medicine bottle full of drywall screws is essential.

After buying quite a few multi-tools, and a alot of Swiss Army Knives, I have discovered that I only use a few tools.

The tools that I find myself using are:
Scissors
Screwdriver (standard)
Bottle-opened
Small pen blade
Tweezers

So now I keep my multi-tools in places like the basement, the kitchen, the car, and the truck. It saves me trips to my tool-box in the garage.

The ones I carry everyday are my Leatherman Micra or my Victorinox Stayglow Climber.

The Micra has everything I use and nothing I don't, but the Stayglow climber is "cooler" than the Micra.
I love the glow-in-the-dark scales of the Climber.

Good luck,
Allen.

I never use the knife blades on my ST 200. I always have at least one, usually more than one, knives on me. I like to see an option to replace the knife blades with something else. For instance, I like the file, but I'd also like a diamond coated file with a groove for fish hooks. I'd like to see a REAL awl.
As it is, I think a good folder + a good multi-tool (especially with a tool adapter and extra bits) = GREAT versitility in meeting the needs I encounter daily.

Currently I don't own but one. It's a "Chevrolet" one that came in a bag with a bunch of stuff for a new Chevy Suburban. It's not even a leatherman or anything. It appears to have like FRN handles.

I never take it anywhere or do anything with it. It sits on a shelf in my closet in a leather "Chevrolet" case.

I pretty much just use my SAK Climber or my Spyderco Delica SE. That's all the multitool I need :D

I agree with Ritt. Instead of having my old-style Wave on my belt, I'd have to be lugging "dedicated" pliers, both regular and needle nose, along with wire cutters, a saw, a file, several screw drivers, scissors, etc. I don't *ever* haul a toolbox along in my car, let alone "attached at the hip."

P.S. Sorry for my being off-topic...I don't use my multitools very much, unless there comes a need for them, and those occur. Old Boy Scout "Be Prepared" thing, I guess.

I have tried multi tools by Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox, and SOG, and in the end I use a Leatherman PST2. If I carried a small SAK with scissors I could use an original PST.

The only tool on the Leatherman that I don't use very often, if at all, is the file; on SAKs the tool I do not need at all is a can opener.

Bought a Vic Swiss Champ, sits with my camp gear most of the time, too bulky. Bought a SOG Powerlock, works pretty well, but is in my safe. Same for my LM Wave. I primarily use my LM Squirt and Juice.

During twelve years of ownership I have used every blade, tool and feature on my SAK Swisschamp, although not always for their designed purposes. Likewise, over 8 years I have used every blade and tool on my Leatherman Supertool except for the tiny screwdriver. A Micra, which I have had as long, provides small screwdriver service plus nail care, scissors and small blade when I'm not packing the SAK.

There is not a day without I carry one or more of these multitools and hardly a day not using them for something or another.

As mentioned, I believe it's better to have the tools than not have them. I mainly use the pliers, file, and knife but at one time or another I've had to use everything. When I think of some of the tools in my basement and how often I use them...well, the multi-tools are a drop in the bucket :D

Tell me about it..

I lost my Charge a couple of weeks ago. There were many times when I needed it/could have used it, and would have had it, but didn't.

I got a replacement today, it's to bad that the Charge is like the top of the line LM, otherwise I could of upgraded. :D Oh well, at least now all is right in the world.

i use all my tools excet the bits for the screws that come with a LM
other than that my Charge, workchamp, fireman, one hand trekker, vic bike kinfe all see some use...my EDC includes a swiss tech mirco an utilkey which i use at least 5 times a day

I use both Victorinox pocketknives and SwissTool R/S, and the Leatherman Wave.

The only tools I've never really used are the pocketknives' tweezers and toothpick. That's why I prefer to have the retractable mini-pen and red LED instead.

Other than that I believe I've used all the tools, though not for their intended purposes, however. For instance, the corkscrew is way too damned short to use as a corkscrew, in my opinion, but it works well at undoing tightly tied knots.

I don't like unnecessary weight, so I try to avoid SAKs with tools I don't expect to use.

I use almost everything on my Rambler. Knife, scissors, flat screwdriver, philips screwdriver, nail file, tweezers, toothpick. I don't generally use the bottle opener (but I'm glad it's there) or the wire bender (but that doesn't add weight).

I think I've used everything on my Juice CS4, too. Many of its tools are just better versions of what is on the Rambler - better screwdrivers, blade, scissors. It adds saw, awl and corkscrew. I have the top of the range model, too, but I don't carry it as I don't think the file and the serrated blade are worth the weight and bulk.

And I have a Swiss Tool. That's actually missing quite a few "must have" tools. No scissors, no small screwdriver, no corkscrew. I keep this one at home where those lacks don't matter too much (I have proper scissors etc in a draw). It's the one I like to use it for odd jobs about the house because it has the best feel to it, and the tools lock. It's too heavy to carry outside, though.

I'm resisting the temptation to buy a Spirit.

I carry the LM Charge Ti and this is pretty much the tools I use, in the order I use them.

1. Pliers
2. Plain Edge Blade
3. Screw Driver
4. Scissors
5. Wire Cutter
6. Serrated Blade
7. Saw

In the 11 or so years of Carrying a Multi tool, I only used the can opener while in Iraq to open a few Coffee Cans. So the can opener has been the least used tool for me.

Over time , I use most all of the tools. The 'exception' was my Delux Tinker, I used all of the tools in a 2 week period. But usually it takes awhile.
