I sent custom knife maker Maurry Carter a e-mail asking him to sharpen my knife and he agreed to for $25 and I'm wondering, does Maurry Carter do good work? and is his services really worth $25? I'm planning on sending him my knife (GEC Brown Bone Scout) along with the $25 whenever I can get some extra pocket change together (times are tight and its gonna take a week or two to get the $25 I need). For those of you who don't know who he is, check out http://www.cartercutlery.com

Murray Carter. Yes, he's real good at it.
Personally, I prefer to develop my own skills.

I've never seen Murray Carter's work, so I can't help you there. I do know that $25 is a reasonable charge for sharpening certain Japanese style blades like the ones Carter makes. Because of the blade design, sharpening is done by hand and is somewhat involved and labor intensive.

Unless your knife has a special grind that I don't know about, it would seem to be overkill to send it in to a Japanese knife sharpener. There are many sharpeners, including myself, that charge much less to service your style of knife.

i agree with esav on getting your own skill level . if you use guns you do'nt send them out to be cleaned so why not look in on the maintenance section & learn to do yourself? practice on cheap kitchen knives 1st then move on as you feel ready. as to gec 1095 it's pretty hard so you need to get a feel before tackling that one . i went to maintenance & learned about diamond paste to get mirrow looking bevels on my knives.this is a little more advanced but someday you might want to go to this level. there are lots of videos showing you the steps in the maintenance section.

I'd say he knows what he's doing but $25 sounds like a bit much

I just got my knife sharpened by him, I can testify that he does fantastic work. I own his sharpening videos and try to sharpen my knives myself, and I'm all right, but I decided to send this one in since it's such an important knife to me. Here is my thread with some before and after shots of the knife.

Mr. Carter got this thing scary sharp, definitely worth it in my opinion.

I'm tempted to send him a knife just to see what a 25 dollar edge looks like, but I couldn't stand the shame. He may very well have thousands of dollars worth of sharpening gear, and/or years of valuable experience. Compared to that investment, 25 bucks sounds kinda cheap, but don't take it out of the grocery money.

Somebody's got to pay for your sharpness, and if he can it get sharp like nobody else, and it holds the edge, and you're satisfied, that's all that matters. Finding out if all that is true involves an initial risk, but if it works out, you're the sharpest knife in the drawer.

FWIW, I've never charged $25 to sharpen anything except a set of industrial planer blades once. Maybe I should get a little more greedy.

Murray Carter wrote the book on sharp... actually 2 books.

I like that large "bowie?" that he's holding in the pic on the right. Looks like a heck of a chopper!

I also believe in developing your own skills, but as stated before ^ I would be interested in seeing what one of his $25 edges looks/feels like. :)

u guys have to realize one thing...it ain't gonna be worth it to send murray a cold steel bowie or something to sharpen.....a nice hard japanese knife that can take the kindof edge he is known for...that's another story....ryan

The sharpness of Carter's knives is nearly legendary.

He is a Certified Master Bladesmith of the ABS.

If $25.00 includes shipping both ways, I'd say the price is reasonable considering the
quality of work that will be done and the qualifications of the person who'll be doing it.

Murray usually uses about $40 worth of equipment. He's pretty famous for using a 1k/6k King stones, just about as cheap as you can get. He has some videos where he sharpens on a cinder block and strops on a sheet of cardboard. He's often said that sharpening is 95% technique and 5% gear, and he puts his money where his mouth is.

BTW, we have a "Sharpening Olympics" contest going on over at "another site." A bunch of members were shipped identical, NItB knives to sharpen and send in for judging. Murray graciously accepted the challenge and entered our little contest!:D The results should be out in a week or so...

Oh. Well unfortunately, I've got that 95-5 ratio the other way around. I don't know Murray but now I'm gonna go look him up when I get time.

I'm guessing the reason for the $25 is because Murray is a knife maker and not a knife sharpener. He even says in his video that the best way to get to know your knife is to sharpen it. I'm guessing he beleives people should sharpen there own blades moreso than having someone else do it for you. I've seen how sharp he does get an edge and if you do decide to send him a blade I'm sure your going to get it back sharper than it has ever ben.
Rob any way you can give a little better hint as how to find out more about that contest?

I know many people here would appreciate a link to more info. about this contest, or even just to the results when they come out. Is that a possibility? Thanks, Rob.

Guys, it's on "the other site".

I'm not going to post a link out of respect for the BF rules on cross-forum posts, but if you look around a bit
using your favorite interweb search engine, you should be able to find it easily.
