Alright who out there loves those MORRELLs as much as me. It might be a midwest tradition but im curious to see who goes mushroom hunting and who's had any luck. I think its a bit early but its been a mild winter here in KC so i think im ganna try my luck today. Let me know who else will be dining on the divine this spring!

Too early here. I also pick Chanterelles, Yellow caps and Bolitas. I also used to pick the giant white puff balls in the apple orchards of souther Ontario, as a kid. Their sizes ranged from soft ball to soccer ball. Mushrooms.....mmmmmmmmmm. :D

Morels, chanterelles, black trumpet chanterelles, honey mushrooms, blewits, prince agarics, king boletes and white king boletes, shaggy manes, hedgehog mushrooms, white truffles, candy caps, and many more. Good eatin'. Good fun.

It's a bit late in the season for most of the fungi in my area, but there are still some good ones coming.

We used to get the ones growing in cow patties around Gainesville, FL.

Made for some interesting evenings! LOL

Psilo something or other.

Wish I could remember, but the late '60's early 70's are kinda foggy.

Yea that would be quite the experience if they grew wild :D . I just got back from the woods with no luck. I think the ground is still a bit to cool.

I can't wait to get out, unfortunately the morels don't show here until the aecond half of May. There is still a foot of snow in the bush here now. We have an active mycological society, and the local favourites are (in order of appearance):
the Verpas and Morels (yellow and black), the red caps (Leccinum), the Oyster mushrooms, King Boletes, Hericium, puffballs, shaggy manes, hedgehogs, and Honey mushrooms.
My personal favourites are the Morels, followed by the hedgehogs.

I have a bunch growing in the cow sh** in my field. They are little purple things. Havent ever ate them though. A lot of people around here enjoy eating them. Lets see how many people get this comment :).

Probably enough of us have experimented in the past. But it bugs me that we are talking about it. Some kid who might not have otherwise never dreamed of this stuff before, may now check it out. I have seen people changed to the point that they will never be the same person they were after doing this. Much less getting a hold of the wrong ones. Who wants that on there hands?

I haven't had a chance to go yet, but a friend of mine found a dozen small morels, mostly black ones, here in Northwest Arkansas.

The temperature is right and the dogwoods are starting to bloom, so I'll be heading out a day or two after the next rain!

Where about are you in KC? I'm just south of Olathe, and have always wanted to hunt a few morrells. Supposed to rain tonight and/or tomorrow; might have to walk in the woods.

I luv going in the woods for morels, nothin could be finer! Do you use paperbags to store em when you find them? and not plastic! I have a book on how to dry em out (if I could only find it) so I could have em all year! I read their great with scrambled eggs, I gotta try it. Has anyone ever found them in the fall, I understand they grow then too.

Soon I am going to go out and hunt for some morels, almost the time out here in South Louisiana. Just have to wait for a good rain and some more warm weather.

Mushroom picking is awesome, not too many morelles around here from what I've seen. I get a lot of shaggy manes, coral mushrooms, puff balls, and hen of the woods though.

puffballs only for me, I usually start looking for them when steelies starts to run, which is around...now.

I used to make my own roe bags, cured in Borax, for steel head/browns. I fished the Wilmot/Bowmanville creeks and the Ganaraska river. Nothing and I mean nothing compares to a big fresh steelhead straight in from lake Ontario. Insane ! Only thing out west here that compares is a big laker or pike, but they still don't have the line burning runs of a steelhead. I tip my hat to that fish. Sorry about the tangential thread jack, I just flashed down memory lane for a second. :D I also pick shaggy mane mushrooms, but the show up after the first frost of fall out here.

Hey upnorth, those are the exact same streams I go to... One big reason I haven't head you ways is that I miss the great spring and fall runs of steels and salmons!!

anyone know of a good online edible shroom guide? I'll google it eventually, just wondered if any of you have a favorite site.

Here are a few I keep my eye out for. As with anything "iffy", when in doubt DON'T eat it! There are alot of dead "experts" that are mushroom food.;)
