Mushroom Huntin!

I remember metal detecting once and finding one of them puff balls (they look like skulls!) and kicking it to pieces! What a waste. Now I know better. Great shots mewolf

Well, 30+ years ago in Florida anywhere there was a university with cow pastures nearby you would find some folks that liked to experiment with "Magic Mushrooms." I'm not sure what the long term effects might have been, but I was NOT one of those experimenters. A friend of mine back then knew where to find a lot of these things, and he knew a kid with "connections" in Chicago I think it was. He gathered a good sized box of mushrooms for this kid, who later brought him back enough money to make it interesting. Then he supplied him with several bushels to fill the next order, and the little b*****d disappeared and never came back! :D

I went morel hunting Saturday with my wife and a friend. We gathered about five pounds worth in just over an hour!

The ones we'd found out of the creek beds were kind on dry, so we passed over quite a few that we could have picked. We probably threw away about a pound of bad/dried spots and bad mushrooms while cleaning them.

We found mostly yellow morels, but one black morel.

I had fried morels and a morel omelet for breakfast Sunday morning.

It was my wife's first time looking for morels (though she'd eaten them before). She was spotting them faster than we could pick them. I think we'll both go again if we get another chance (and another good rain).

I hope the rest of you are having success, as well.

Haven't been out yet this year, but my first date with my wife was Mushroom hunting. we didn't find any, but she didn't know what they looked like and I was having a hard time keeping my eyes on the ground....
:D :D

Jarlaxle,

My grandmother would always say to start looking about the time that the dogwoods start blooming. I've found that to be a good indication, but they may delay a bit if there's not enough rain. The best time to look is a day or two after a good rain.

Hope this helps and Happy Hunting.

jarlaxle..I'm from Wamego, KS...about 2 hrs West of you. I'm in OR now and I miss morels soooo much. I used to start finding them aroun mid April... not too much longer!

Thanks guys.. i'm gettin the morel itch if i dont eat any in the next couple weeks i might have to chicken out and buy some.

The area I now live in isn't much for mushrooms, not like when I was a kid in Ohio.
How ever I do have a genuine mushroom hunting knife. No kidding Got it from Atlanta cutlery years ago. Made in France has a Little hocked blade on one side and a stiff brush on the other.
I guess if your French it wouldn't be proper etiquette to hunt mushrooms with the wrong knife.
Now if I just knew what the right gauge gun was to hunt mushrooms I'd be set.
