I know this is probably a futile effort on my part, but I think I'm addicted already. Even though I have never found a Morel Mushroom, I can't help but be excited about the prospect of finding one in the woods this spring. Something about a delicacy that miraculously pops up every spring for a short period of time and only in certain spots.

He we go.....Anyone out there find any of these little gems yet this year? Pictures would be nice if you took/take any. Is there anyone who lives near Hershey, PA who might want to help a fledgling mushroom hunter scout for some? Thanks a Bunch,

Bob

You know,
I wouldnt mind some tips as to where to look for them as well.
near oak trees,pines,deep forest????
Im in Chicago and can get to a few forest preserves, would love to see
if there are any around here.

Dead Elm trees are usually your best bet. I went for a walk last weekend and didn't see any. Still a little too early. Good Luck.

Actually, that shot is from last year, and from California, not Pennsylvania. I'm sure I'll find some, this year, too.

I believe you are a little early. You should probably begin to find them about the time the Trout Lily is in bloom (mid-April or about when Trout Season starts in PA) as well as the Jack in the Pulpit. Things progress pretty rapidly in the spring in terms of wild flowers and new growth. Start taking walks out in a hardwood stand.

I have had the best luck around elms as well but not always. Im about an hour south of the city and there were people outside today in the woods by me hunting them, Till the weather changed. Hopefully this cold spell dosent spoil it for us. And for thoes of you who have never found one just wait!!!! I can remember saying will I know what they look like, and once you see your first one you will lay in bed at night and see them! Just be careful if you go out early you will step on em. Walk slow, keep your eyes peeled, and good luck asking around where to find them most of the time folks will point you in the wrong direction to keep ya away from there secret shroom spot! But I have found them in plenty of places you would have never guessed, even in a old gravel drive way with a lot of shade - Joel

Found this one the other day in a wooded area right by the side of a swamp:

I haven't found any as of yet, but I will try this year. Apparently in my area they like to grow around poplar stands, especially in areas that were burned a couple years previous.

I live in Michigan and I have not heard of anyone finding any morels yet but it will be soon so probably sooner for you. The dead elm thing is right but near any dead tree can work. Don`t forget to tap on them when you find them to shake off spores so they may grow again in the same area in the future .(I don`t know if this really works but the old timers say do it so I do it ,it may be nuts but they can always find the most so they know something I don`t)

I'll be down in Maryland later this month to go shroom hunting with the wife's uncles. My first outing so it will be interesting to see how I will fair.

I havent been out yet but will soon. I hunt mushrooms every year. Try to get away from the crowds . Local parks are usually overhunted. Good areas include creek/ river bottoms, brushy fence rows, standing dead elms. Look for bark that is just starting to peel away. I circle such trees . A forty foot tree I will look to about forty foot out, then head to the next tree. Most often there will be others close by when you find one. Oddly , I have found lots of shrooms under brushhogged powerlines .

They are dlicious , the bigger the better. Pick fresh ones. I hang old ones from branches so the spores will spread. Soak in salt water , to remove the bugs. Dip in egg, then cracker meal and fry. I like ketchup on them.

This is from last year. Found these along a river bank while fishing.

They often come up in groups.

We found enough yesterday for dinner tonight. We focus on areas with stands of older poplar trees. Most yesterday were much lower than we normally find them. I watch the wild Dogwoods and when they start blooming it's usually time to start hunting.

Ive had good luck around old apple orchards. Also around old burns. The old timers have some saying about them coming out when the oak leaves are the size of squirrels ear. Still a little early here I think.--KV
