So I will be going to my first music festival in a month, and I was curious if anyone has experience with taking something like a SAK through the gates. I have no idea if they have metal detectors, and if they do, do they consider SAKs weapons? If need be I will leave my swiss army knife in the car(or bring one I'm prepared to throw away), but just the thought of going all day knifeless makes me cringe.
I've done the whole concert thing and never had a problem with searches or whether they define multi tools as weapons, but the festival scene is uncharted territory for me.

As the swiss army knife isn't a deal breaker to daily survival I think it will be ok in the car for a few hours.
What would be the point of bringing one to throw away at the gate??

Oh I am fully aware that I could make it 10 hours without a knife. I just feel naked without it, so if at all possible I would like to have it on me.
Regarding the throw away, I was referring to a knife that if need be, wouldn't be the end of the world if I HAD to throw it away.

How badly do you want to go to the festival? It's just a tradeoff of wants.

I've never been to a festival where they had metal detectors, but it could depend on what type of festival it is. Is it the peace and love hippy fest? Or the Raw Core Death Metal Extraviganza?

I think you would have a better chance getting a knife into the Death Metal event.:D

Seriously, if it's an out door event, and not held in an actual complex like a stadium or something like that, then at the most, they may frisk you. I've been to several events which were held in an open field type environment, and never been searched.

You just have to decide what risk your willing to take. You can always wait until they open the gate, stroll up to the entrance, and "recon" the security. Then make the appropriate decision to carry it, or leave it in the car.

I donated a buck folder at an OzFest. Forgot it was in my pocket till the gate and didn't want to walk back to car.

I guess it depends on the scope of your festival. I was at a rather large 4 day festival. Mind you i wasnt into nice folders yet (thanfully), but it was a camp with your car type festival and your whole vehicle was searched upon entering. I had a no name camo folder confiscated and my buddy lost his sog twitch which was sad. So i guess my only advice is, hide it in your butt?

Never seen a metal detector at a music festival, but I have been lightly frisked and my bag gets checked every time. Make it a SAK or small Leatherman-style multitool - most security will not blink an eye at those.

That said, it will ultimately depend on the venue. As others have made clear, you will get by fine without it too.

You won't need it inside the festival, why would you even bring it with you? Security will frisk you, find it and possibly bar entry or make you feel very uncomfortable about it.

Better safe than sorry, just leave it in your car.

I see you are in GA. If you are going to Rockstars Mayhem Fest, then dont worry, all they do is scan your ticket and let you in. Its way too difficult to make everyone go through metal detectors. They do check bags though... generally.

If it is Warped tour... I have no idea there rules.

Anything else... I wouldnt know.

Whatever the rules are at a music festival, there shouldn't be any risk of losing ones knife. If security says "no knives allowed" then you have the option to go back and put it in your vehicle. Security doesn't have any legal authority to confiscate your property, that would be theft.

Of course if it were me, I'd figure out a way to carry a knife. After all, it's not a difficult matter, and it's certainly not illegal, or an arrestable offense to carry a knife into a music festival.

On a separate matter, it always surprises me when people on a KNIFE forum say "You don't need a knife."

And that makes me wonder how many people on this forum could easily go a day/week/month/year without NEEDING a knife away from home. And yet, I imagine that they carry one anyway. Maybe even two.

Personally, I don't just carry a knife for times when I know that I'm going to need it, I also carry a knife for times when I don't know I'm going to need it. That's the funny thing about life- it can be unpredictable, and you never know when a knife might come in handy.

I read a saying once, it goes something like this-"A sharp knife is mans best hedge against the uncertainties of life". This is a philosophy I agree with.

I'm sure there are countless times in my 45 years when I unexpectedly needed a knife. Of course I'm not talking about fighting off a ninja attack or performing emergency surgery, I'm talking about all the sorts of mundane tasks that pop up during the course of ones life.

Here's one such story that springs to mind because it is recent-

I took the family to the zoo. At one point inside the zoo I took off my sunglasses and noticed that the tiny philips head screw that attaches one of the earpieces had worked itself loose and was ready to fall out. These screws are tiny, too tiny to use my fingernail to turn them. So I pulled out my Leatherman Squirt, but none of the screwdrivers was small enough. So I used the knife blade as a screwdriver, it worked great, problem solved.

Now obviously this was not a life or death situation, it was a very mundane task. But that's my primary reason for carrying a knife- to perform mundane tasks. If I didn't have a knife with me, I would have had to put my glasses inside some kind of bag (to avoid losing the screw), then give it to my girlfriend to carry in her purse, then buy some cheap pair of sunglasses just for the day that I would never wear again. But that's not my idea of solving a problem. Certainly not when a simple, and cost-free solution is as readily available as my pocket knife.

I have been to countless shows. And honestly I cant remember a single time being searched to the point of them finding my pocket knife. A good thing to try is contacting promoters and asking what specific items they dont allow. That information may even be on their website or the website of the company providing security for the event. Either way I always stuff my knife in my shoe until I am well within the event. Still, I never had a need to do that. And in hindsight im not sure it was the wisest move. There is absolutely nothing you need a knife for in a show within reason.

If you are wearing shoes and socks, you can hide in inside of them...I have taken knives into Dallas Stars hockey games and made it through metal detectors and security that way when I remembered my blur too late to go back to the car. I put it in my "sneakers" under my inside ankle a little towards the front (kinda under the tongue between my sock and shoe) so it would not work its way out while I was walking through security. Just be ready to lose it if they find it and you parked a long way away.

Take a Rexford RUT. If security objects, give them the disposable blade and keep the handle.
