Music: Iron Maiden fan..you're favorite album.

I've wondered for years - does anyone know how "Eddie" got his name? I loved him, at first only because he made the ladies in our church cringe when they saw him. :D

thx - cpr

According the band there was a joke around 1976 or so about a kid born with no body, just a head. His name was Eddie, as in 'Eddie the Head'. When Maiden needed a prop for their stage it was a mask, so they named it Eddie.

Back in '93, I read a book called Frozen In Time, about the Franklin (Northwest Passage) expedition in 1846-47, and the expeditions that followed, to find out what happened to the first one. It's almost creepy how much the song resembles that event, and others like it. (I don't think the song & that specific event are related, but who knows?)

I wouldn't be surprised. Steve Harris is a ferocious reader and a lot of early Maiden tunes were inspired by movies and literature.

As for me, my favorite..probably
1) Piece of Mind, got it for my 13th birthday.
2) Powerslave
3) Killers
4) Any of the live albums.

Who cares enough to frame an old rock poster!!!?? A fan, that's who.
Hahahhahah
I got my "Stranger in a Strangeland " poster i bought around 1987 all ready to be framed
iron-maiden-eddie-stranger.jpg

I found it at my mom's house a few years ago
It has some pinholes in the corners
Other than that it's ready for framing...

Interesting trivia I did not know===>
"Stranger in a Strange Land" is one of only three Iron Maiden songs to fade out, the other being "The Prophecy" from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and "Women in Uniform", a single included on some pressings of Killers.

Regarding my question on the inspiration of the song Stranger In A Strange Land, wikipedia had this to say:

"Adrian Smith was inspired to write about this song after talking to an explorer who had had a similar experience of discovering a frozen body."

I searched this years ago, and nothing came up. I forgot about it 'til now. (Got it playing as I type.)

ps - morrowj - thanks for a great thread; literally a "trip somewhere back in time".

Its a terrible thing to have to pick one,so i rolled a die.It was a four, piece of mind it is.I am off to see Maiden play on February 21.Been waiting a long time for this.:)

I'd have to say that "Piece of Mind" and "Powerslave" are my favorite albums while "The Number of the Beast" and "Still Life" are my favorite songs.

p.s. I have iTunes on shuffle and "Flight of Icarus" just came on...now that's eerie.

Pick only one?!?!...Now thats a tough one-Live after death was the first Maiden that I owned wich has so many cool songs. But then there's Powerslave and Piece of Mind-Sorry I can't pick one too many good ones!
As far as posters go,you guys have me wondering about all the wall posters and the giant Eddie door poster.I think part of the draw to the band was the art work!
Great thread,I think its going to be all Maiden all day in the shop today:thumbup:

I have seen them live 5 times since 1982, been a fan since before that. It's too hard for me to name one favorite album, but an underated tune (from I think Killers) would be " The Prisoner".

Somewhere in Time, I agree, I love wasted years, that was the perfect time of being a teen. I drew the albums all the time. I will have to take a photo of a couple eddie's I drew many moons ago. paul

Please do, I love seeing other artwork. The two drawings in my post are an eddie that I made up myself back in about '87, and the reproduction of the Killers album cover, which I did by using the album cover as a model. That one was done in early '90s. I have others somewhere in the attic, will post if I get my ass up there to look:D

Wasted Years is a great song. Stranger in a Strange Land though...that song just hypnotizes me.

Funny thing about Somewhere is that Adrian Smith wrote most of the better songs, Stranger, Wasted Years, Sea of Madness.

Anyone ever pick up any singles with bonus tracks? I had a few but about 10years back they re-released the catalogue with bonus tracks. The bonus tracks from Somewhere are awesome to say the least. There's a tune, Reach Out, that Adrian sings the lead.

"THE PRISONER" was on NUMBER OF THE BEAST. that whole album kicked ass. it was my first exposure to maiden and i still enjoy it. POWER SLAVE is a close second. RHYME OF THE ACIENT MARINER and FLASH OF THE BLADE are my two favorites on that one.

I have the whole collection of single re-releases, and yes, Reach Out is one killer track!!:thumbup: Also noteworthy are Burning Ambition with original singer Paul Dianno on vocals, and King of Twilight, which I believe is a cover of a Nektar track. Any Maiden fan should check them out. The B-side singles are some of Maiden's coolest stuff.

I haven't heard Iron Maiden (a whole album that is) since I was a teenager. I always liked Number of The Beast and Piece of Mind. It's funny, though, because when Powerslave came out I loved it, but I don't remember anyone else thinking it was that good-- fans and critics alike. But I see everyone on this thread loves it.

As far as songs ago, I love Wasted Years. It's a genuine classic. Still Life would be a close second.
