That beautiful Muskrat (posted recently) that Ken Erickson made for me has been in my pocket ever since I got it. And, it has given me a new appreciation of the pattern for every day use.
Maybe it's maturity (I doubt it:p!), or maybe it's a milestone in my life, but I've never considered carrying one before. I'm not a trapper, and have shot only a couple of squirrels and groundhogs in my life, and have never skinned one of them!! Fed the farmer's dogs though!!
I have only skinned a couple of deer (Mora fixed blade), so at least I'm not completely out of that basic connection with Mom Nature!
Muskrats always seemed kinda long and spindly to me, and , well . . .weak! Like I could snap one in half !! Wait!! I have snapped one in half !!
But it was a moment of foolishness, and now that I am 65 years old, that's not likely to happen again! (Yeah . . .right:rolleyes:)
Anyway, those long slim Muskrat blades are downright useful!! They slit open a box or envelope, slice up an apple, orange or pear, for my several servings of fresh fruits and veggies every day, and they make a very good steak knife! ~ (My wife; "Charlie, are you ever gonna put that darn thing away???" - - - -Charlie; " It was away, dear!! MW - -"When?"- - C - "before dinner it was away! I remember distinctly:D!!" - -groan:rolleyes":! ~
So anyway, a friend of mine who deals almost exclusively in Case knives bought a collection, and in it was a stray Schrade Muskrat, pattern number 787. His price was outrageous, but me being an old customer, he agreed to cut it in half (I TOLD you it was outrageous!), so I bought it!
My name is Charlie, and I am a Muskrataholic!! Especially if it has a single backspring!
Enough blah blah blah, here comes the good part; The Pictures!!!
Schrade787Stray3.jpg

Notice the joints are almost fully sunk! And who doesn't love that Peachseed bone??
Schrade787Stray1.jpg

It hasn't been used or sharpened too much. There's a trace of the "Improved Muskrat" etch still there. That proves it hasn't been repolished, although some stains have been rubbed off IMO.

And here's a comparison of a similarly sized knife with two backsprings. Along with the sunk tang, this Rat makes a nice pocketable package!

Hope you enjoyed this bit of blather, and feel free to make Ratty ;) comments, yea or nay!!
Respectfully submitted,

Hi,

A very nice score! I really like the bone. The color is so warm and inviting to touch. I'm beginning to think the Muskrat is a pattern I've been missing out on.

What makes the muskrat guard his musk....COURAGE! I know that has nothing to do with the ultra cool Schrade Muskrat with peachseedy, caramelicious bone goodness you posted above but, I love that quote. Thank you for your thoughful post...I feel the love, Charlie....I really do. :p

Muskrat LOVE;) can't beat them "rats":D sept I'm still huntin me a single spring:mad: ONE of these days!!!

OH ya Charlie that is GEORGOUS;)

Stomps off and pouts (ONE of these DAYS) my rat will be found:(:p

Great looking knife. I really like muskrats; especially the single backspring design.

Very sharp & a nice slim carry.

Waynorth.
I got a Schrade 77 OT muskrat improved with 2 backsprings. I have the same feeling you describe abot fear to snap the blades. When I was young I used it a lot as a fishing and smallgameknife in the woods and it held up, for me kind of a proof its not so fragile after all. Its now semiretired as it started to hold sentimental walue of presious times that is gone.
Now when I know other patterns and considering the difficulty to bring sliopjoints to my part of the world I doubt I will ever use one again as EDC.

After having a MM with 2 backsprings, I too am trying to find a single backspring muskrat. I like tha pattern and I think the single backspring would be more eye appealing with crinks and blade lay in. nice score.

my favorite pattern & i beleive the schrade was the 1st with single back spring, levine will know for sure.your knife should bring at least 400$. last 2 i bought were kutmasters. in rural areas of america trapping was a big thing since it added income to farmers especially in depression era.muskrats are the most common of our furbearers bringing about 2 dollars now due to worldwide soft market.no pattern was better for ducks, rabbits, squirrels, mink, pine martens,& of course muskrats.for coons, fox, coyotes& beaver more effective patterns were trappers & stockknives. the sharp point & slender blade were unsurpassed for small animals.ken erricksons is simply the most beatiful folder i've seen in a while.out of my income bracket guess it would go for 8 Or 900$ if he puts it out.i.m.o. the musk. & whittler are the most graceful folder patterns.

Muskrats ... those long slim Muskrat blades are downright useful!! They slit open a box or envelope, slice up an apple, orange or pear, for my several servings of fresh fruits and veggies every day, and they make a very good steak knife!

I've actually been thinking lately about trying one, as I really like long thin blades (as I wrote in this thread). I think the key is to just think of it as a single-blade knife - that happens to have two blades.

I like Muskrats two.

Queen City Cutlery Winterbottom bone Turkish clips
It has cutouts for the nail nicks, which makes it even slimmer.

Queen Cocobolo in D2
Sharpened the two blade differently
The thinner 'main' blade at a very acute angle, and the thicker blade more obtuse.
So they cut differently

That old Schrade certainly has some wonderful bone on it.

I think a Muskrat is better as just a single-spring knife, its slimness in the pocket is a major plus point. The blades may be thin but in the Queen D2 Amber Bone I have, they seem sturdy enough. Yes, a very useful snack&food prep knife, fish filleting or skinning a creature if you must. I saw a video somewhere of a muskrat skinning contest for girls....they were using a Queen Cutlery 11 Utility Knife, a kind of ultra long slim single blade Muskrat.

Great looking rat. I have three myself and enjoy carrying them when I go hunting. The ones I have are a Canal Street, Case Mini and a Camillus. The Case mini is also a nice small edc.

A pair of single spring Schrade Waldens with delrin handles and the squared bolsters. Once they changed to a square bolster, most of them were double springs.

Nice thread Charlie. Love those blond bone scales to start it off.

That's one sweet 'rat, Charlie. I really like the color and jigging of those beautifully-matched scales, and the grooved bolsters add a nice measure of refinement. Damn if you don't manage to get your greasy mitts on all the good stuff. :)

Here's a another single-springer with double liners. Previously posted on Levine's board, but I don't think I've shown it here.

Well, I didn't get my greasy mitts on that Rem, Rick!! Nice one!!!
So Remington used the double liners, and a narrower spring, instead of catch bits! Certainly an easier way to squeeze two blades in there!
Any knifemakers agree??

I know the Remington that you sent me for use as a pattern had catch bits. I would think using double liners would be a cost saving measure. Charlie, do you think the Remington you broke the blade on pre-dates this one with double liners?
