I've been thinking about buying a new muskrat pattern, I'd prefer Case CV, any recommendations? Are there any muskrats with a single backspring, in hopes of a thinner knife? Been lurking here a while, interesting and informative site. Thanks

queen has a single backspring muskie in amber bone & d2 steel thats a beauty. you should have diamond hones to sharpen d2. if not go with case c.v. steel.if you want the best get the g.e.c. muskie in 1095, however has 2 backsprings.

Only muskrat I have is the Cold Steel version in Carbon V, I am sure someone probably made a single back spring knife but I would bet it would be rare. Problem is the blades are the same length and they overlap in the handle. they would have to be really angled off center not to hit each other with a single spring.

One in Case CV would be a wicked cutter...

Thanks for the response! I have an Old Timer muskrat that has been sharpened so much that the blades are almost like needles. I do use an E-Z-Lap diamond hone to sharpen all my knives. Interested in more info about this pattern and/or pictures. Almost all my knives are users including stockman, trapper, sodbusters, and i muskrat. Thanks

22 hornet,

I like muskrats, I have a Case Chestnut bone cv, and the other day I placed an order for a northwoods hawbaker stag muskrat which I should have tomorrow. It is d2, which I like. But the case was a 1/3 the price. The queen in amber bone and d2 is a great knife too. But i don't have one of those, yet.

I have a Case CV in chestnut that is one of my faves. CV is a great steel and when coupled with 2 turkish clip blades...well that's why its one of my faves:D

Anyone have any pictures of muskrats they would like to share? It would be nice to see some options and examples, to help me decide which one to get.
Just curious to see what everyone has out there. Thanks

Queen in Cocobolo in D2
Excellent knife with a single spring
Thin in the pocket
The blades are narrow
Sharpened the two blades a different angles, to get a razor edge and a working edge

You can get them in Amber Stagbone or Maple

A great knife, Both of mine (yes, I have two of them) had great fit and finish and blades that push-cut paper right out of the box(es).

It has two backsprings but no liner between them so it's overall just slightly thicker than the single backspring Queen.

The Queen muskrat, already mentioned, is another muskrat I like a lot.

Canal Street makes a single backspring muskrat with some real nice blade steel, not their usual 420HC.
It's another muskrat I highly recommend.

This is my Cold Steel muskrat along with its cousin the bird knife which substitutes a gut hook for the second blade. While they have been discontinued they can still be found online. The Carbon V was made by Camillus, sadly they closed and Carbon V became a thing of the past.

Thanks for the pictures and info. Looks like I'll have to get a Case and a Queen......decisions.... decisions...

Do Case use Clip or Turkish?

This is Turkish

That's a very nice Queen Classics Winterbottom Muskrat you have there. :)

Anyway, to answer your question, the Case muskrat uses two clip point blades - not Turkish.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a Queen Classics Winterbottom Muskrat? Give me a link....

I just purchased a Case chestnut bone muskrat in CV, that Case jigged bone is some really nice stuff! I can get the CV poppin' hairs with my sharpmaker and a strop. Seems to hold the edge pretty well but I can't find any information anywhere on what hardness Case is running their CV at. Found lots of stuff on composition and such, but has anybody ever tested one of their blade for hardness? I tried asking them directly and just got a polite reply quoting the page on the website. Love the knife though...

The Queen Muskrat I have in Honey Amber Bone is one of the best made production knives I own. Can't find fault with its build-quality at all, expertly finished. It even came sharp...something of a rarity with their D2,but it seems easy to keep it sharp. Very slim in the bin as it's a single spring.

Here is a Schatt on top,two springs
Queen Classic Red stag on bottom, single spring & catch bits

Unless you want a beefier knife,IMO the single is more desireable

Here is the blades, another Queen classic, same style as above in bone, though
