What blade do you think everyone should have in their collection? Please tell us why!

1. Ontario 18" Machete M1942: This is the best of the best at a very very reasonable price >$25.00 USD! USA Military Standard!

I think people should have whatever appeals to their personal tastes and whatever meets their needs.

One size doesn't fit all.

Every knife I own was a "must have" at the time it was purchased. Now a lot of them sit and gather dust, and some, like almost all of the tantos I bought, are long gone. My most recent "must have", a Cold Steel Espada XL. A lot of people must buy them, or the model would have been discontinued by now. Still not a really useful knife, just neat to have and play with, being ever mindful that huge folding blade would probably sever your fingers if they were in it's path on closing. OUCH!

I do not, at this time, know what my next "must have" knife will be. But I know there will be one soon enough.

Waiting for it. ;-)

Why do you think everyone must have that machete in their collection?

If we are going to have to "tell us why"....you should too!

By the way...everyone should have a Case peanut, becuase if you learn how to use it, you can use any knife safely.

Best of the best? Maybe at it's price range, but I much prefer Condor's machetes. For that matter, I don't find it any better than any Imacasa, if you touch up the Imacasa a bit(or have 42Blades do it for you), and those are even cheaper.

IMO, there's no such thing as a "must have" knife. Buy what you like. For me, a Ka-bar USMC is a must have...but other people have no interest in them. Some people consider a Schrade Old Timer or a Case Swayback Jack essentials...I have no interest in them. And so on.

I'd go by manufacturer flagships...

Benchmade: 94X, 710, Grip

Busse: Basic, TGLB

Spyderco: Military, Paramilitary 2

Microtech: Ultratech

These are only the brands I'm familiar with... Anybody care to add or subtract?

I agree it is personal preferences ! For me I think that a traditional Bowie knife says America and the story behind it show's the American spirit, How ever it's not my favorite knife to use. I don't like the way they feel in hand at all. But I love what it represents!! U.S.A.

a sak because there are times when one might actually require more than just a sharp knife.
an opinel for the times when you need to cut cheese and not scare on lookers with a tactitool.
a kabar to go into harms way.
and a tactical knife just to impress everyone.

I actually tend to do this also. There are reasons some models are extremely popular and so far i have not been disappointing. It may be kinda of a herd mentality but sometimes the herd is right.

I have yet to be let down by the recommendations of this forum! Great minds think alike ;)

A good multitool, preferrably Leatherman or Victorinox, because there isn't a day that goes by that said tool wouldn't save you time and possible frustration.

A Tramontina machete. Say what you will about Imacasa, my experiences with Trams started with restoring decades old machetes and using them to this day. A real plant killer, cheap, and takes a crazy edge.

Any Opinel, because you haven't sliced anything til you've sliced with an Opinel's super thin flat grind. I could apply this to any full sized Victorinox Swiss Army Knife as well.

Svord Peasant, because the rugged look belies one hell of a hard working knife.

At least one each of ESEE and Becker, starting with neck knife size. My Izula II takes all abuse and keeps on cutting. Same can be said for my BK16. My Junglas is an absolute monster that never seems to lose an edge.

PM2: sweetest lock in the world
Sebenza (or Zaan): finest, meticulously-crafted production knife by far
Strider: to head off any attack of a herd of wildebeest.
SurviveKnife 4.1 in 3V or S90v: because I want the best.
Grayman DUA: It's the nicest balance between a small and large Sebenza.
