A new book just came out in Japan called Tactical Knives by Tomo Hasegawa, ISBN4-88346-043-6 C0076. If you want some of the finest photographed collection of custom and production Emersons, this is it. Words can't do it justice. You will probably never see this many customs anywhere (especially the rare ones). The book also contains excellent work on Strider knives, and many other customs. Tamishigiri and I provided an unbelivable inventory of knives for the photo shoot, and the book contains at least half of them. It was all shot in So. Calif., before anyone gets upset that all the good stuff is going to Japan. I don't have a source yet for the book, but I figure with the ISBN number, one of the Emerson fanatics will find a good source. If I hear of one, I'll post it.

Jason,
Can you supply me with the phone # & address of the book store you refered to. How much is the book. Thanks
David

As of this time we do not have a definite answer. It depends on how well it is received
in Japan was the initial answer I got.
Publishers do not want to invest extra $
unless it makes CENTS.

The book store's address is:
10 W. 49th @ Rockefeller Plaza.
212 765 1461

The book's title is, if I got this right, "Kakuto Knife" if you're ordering it. They asked me to fax them all my info (name, address, Visa #, etc.) on a phone order, so you may want to use that too:
212 541 9335. Hope this works!

Hey jbravo,

I believe the title is "Tactical Knives."

You basically spelled out the phonetic version of Japanese accented english saying "tactical". (substitute k with t)

nyeti, is the ISBN correct? I thought ISBN numbers contained only 10 digits.

The title I posted was how the store's clerk spelled it to me. He also mentioned that the publisher is Santen publishers, which is the phonetic version of the Japanese name. I figured I'd go with what he told me to use because he seemed to know which book I was looking for, just not by the name Tactical Knives. I'll find out in about a month whether I'm getting the Emerson pictorial, or a surprise birthday present!

The book was 2000 yen which came out to 32.95 plus 5.00 for delivery. I think the cover has a guy on it holding a folder in reverse grip with a crazy expression on his face.

5 points for the first person to identify the guy with the crazy expression on his face.

Reference the ISBN #, Its ISBN4-88346-043-6. Thats off the back of the book. I know who the crazy guy is, What do the five points get me at the Emerson booth?

Nyeti or Tamishigiri,

I just got the KNIFE issue 10 with the Emerson spread (Thanks, Costas). I noticed that the photos and text were buy Tomo Hasegawa, the author of the new Tactical Knives. How much new stuff is there in the book or are the same photos used. What other makers are featured. I've already ordered the book but I'm just curious.

Thanks

Jason

Fenris,
The Tactical Knife Book specifically focuses on really Three Chapters.
Chapter one is on Ernie's Custom and EKC.
The Custom stuff is the same w/ the exception
of pictures of Bodyguard(s), Neck Knife Tanto
and Tanto Prototype. Pages 23 thru 111 are of Ernie's Knife techniques, Custom Knives and EKC a.k.a. Production.
Chapter two is on some Bodyguard and the different Tactical Knives he uses. Some Techniques and applications are shown as well. Additionally, other knives such as MD, Viele, Brend(s) (BTF), Hammond, Vallotton,
Carson, Lightfoot, Thomas, Bogusewski and
Steve Ryan are shown. Chapter Three shows Strider Knives and applications as well as LE
scenarios. Possibility of other more comprehensive book in future w/ bigger budget
I'm told.
Hope that answers your questions.

Thanks Tamishigiri!

I'm getting the book from Japan in about two weeks and I'm very excited!

Fenris,
Cool man,
Let me know what you think.
We are aware that there are more but the budget allotted only allowed for what they shot and printed. Hopefully the one in the future will show more great makers w/ more models and more applications/techniques.
It really was just a project that far exceeded my and those people involved expectations. It is w/o a doubt one the finest Books out there to date. Documenting excellent edged weapons especially Tactically oriented focusing on folders. As well as techniques that work.
Enjoy !

If I can add: This thing came about in a crisis, with Tami and I having less than a days notice. We did the project as a favor to one of the photographers. The were a bit overwhelmed when we showed up with about $70,000 worth of customs (we were even a little amazed at what was in our respective safes). I wish we taken a picture of all the knives we had laid out together. Hopefully this first project will be received well enough to have a second one done with some additional makers and expanded work on those originally profiled. In response to the question about the Knife magazine #10 photos, those were about half to 3/4 of the Emersons we had, and they are the same photos.

Interesting, Kakuto is Japanese word for Tactical? Some of the more warlike Koryu (ancient schools of Japanese martial arts) are called Kakuto Bugei. This is translated in Jennifer Lawler's "Martial Arts Encyclopedia" as "Fighting Martial Arts", but I think "Tactical Martial Arts" is an even more appropriate translation.

All very interesting, and probably worth the cost for the pictures alone, but any idea if they ever will produce it in an English version ?

I am surprised it was published first in Japanese, are they big knife collectors as well ?
