Must-Have Knives

Personally, I don't like Opinel's, or sodbuster's. It is a good thing that there are so many different types of knives. I don't think you can tell someone else what they should have in their collection. Just sayin'.

I totally agree, but you've handled enough knives in all likely-hood to know what you like, and how you value different aspects. I think that's why so many budget blades are on the lists as its sort of like knowing the classics. If you have a good understanding of what the basics are, then you won't waste money on knives that don't work for you, or are just plain junk. And its fine if you don't care for those specifics, but it would be hard to argue that a hard use knife should at least be tougher than a mora, and a slicer better preform better than an opinel. Just like a "muscle car" should have more than 4 cylinders, and a rock band should have at least one electric instrument. You can break the rules if you know them, but it helps to start there.

I haven't pocket carried an opinel in a while, and my mora's are on backup duty, but they are still what I compare other knives to.

"Must have in your collection"; well I answered in my post above what I must have in a useful cutting armoury. In a collection then it all depends on what you collect. The "must have" is either a favourite that you already have and unlikely to ever sell, or the next new thing that you just got to have.

I use my knives so have a small collection of knives I use. "Must have" will be something that is missing or just like the look of. What use is what matters.

Collecting for the sake of collection, is something quite different. There is a set criteria be that a manufacturer or style or something to go for. If I was a Collector then whatever next fits the collection. There is searching for older knives that are missing, or just the next new one from some manufacturer that is being collected. "Must haves" depend on what is being collected, what is important for the collecting criteria.

So a better question would be: What are you collecting, specialising in, and for your criteria what are your musts haves?

I answered for making up a collection of useful knives, but thats not "Collecting".

Kabar USMC
...

IMO this. Love it to bits. I know a lot of you guys here are folder guys, but I think IMO anyways, one should have a place in one's collection for the leather stacked washer one as a shelf queen and have the kraton handled one with kydex sheath for use.

I love this blade! A bit of history you can use.

But really, a mora companion is enough and more stain resistant and with the bright colours, much less scary to other people afraid of life and the universe in general. :)

What is good about Kabar USMC? I have one but rarely use it. I fail to see how it is better than many other fixed blades like ESEE and Bradford Guardian. Yes I know it has a splendid history but just wonder if that is the main reason that many people view it as a must-have fixed (I suspect Buck 110 for the same reason as well).

Any flavor of this:

Sebenza (large & small) in flavor of choice
BM Mini-Grip
BM 940
GEC Traditional in flavor of choice
SAC in flavor of choice
Spyderco Para2
Spyderco Military
ZT 560/561 (or flavor of choice)
Fallkniven F1 or A1
Bark River in flavor of choice

I got out of the "having a knife just to have it" thing. If I won't use it or it doesn't have sentimental value, I'll sell it off to someone who will use/appreciate it.
I have a Buck 110, which was one of my first knives and a gift from my father, so even though I don't ever carry it, I'll keep it. If I never had one, I'd never own one. The GEC lock-backs are more my style in that category.

The kraton/kydex sheath one is the sweet spot IMO. It feels great in the hand and the steel, IMO, is easy to maintain and keep sharp. Balance is good. I admit there are far better utility beater knives but I'm going to call nutnfancy's "second kind of cool" on this. I like fighting knives. I like collecting bowies. For the record, I would like to say I DO NOT ADVOCATE KNIFE VIOLENCE. Or any sort of violence for that matter.

A chisel ground CM Tanto of some sort.

can we have a sticky that encompass all these? or a sticky that says, you cannot start a thread that can end up being "Whats your favorite knives" thread.

Who cares? If it really bothers you that much, these threads are pretty avoidable....

It's just you. This really is a "must have" from your "personal collection" with maybe a "and why? thrown in for good measure. Some of us did not keep it on the right path though.
Shame really, because it would have been more interesting if it had.

There are some knives I would consider "classics" of the hobby.

[*]Microtech Halo: the most badass OTF auto

^ The MT Halo V, has my vote! Right now, my other knives don't even matter...

I've never felt this type of total satisfaction, with any other knife before!
