I just ordered my first Opinel and Higonokami. I'm going to pick up a Douk Douk and laguiole in the near future. Any other must haves from around the world?
 
May not be what you had in mind, but a traditional Khukuri from Nepal.

I recommend Himalayan Imports.




And of course a Puukko made by a smith in Finland. Mine should be done soon. :thumbup:

I had a HI khukuri and I really liked it but I had no use for it so I sold it. I try to only have practical (for me) knives. I think a Puuko would be a good addition though. I may have to add one to the collection.
 
The Sardinian Resolza, knife of shepherds and bandits in the hills of Sardinia. You'll have to talk to our man in Sardinia, Fausto.

Every collection needs a Laguiole of some kind (the French kind mind) Even an Old Lag like this:D

I am going through the same process as the OP. I just received a Mercator K55 and a medium Higonokami. Laguiole and Douk-Douk are next on my list, as well as a Resolza, when I can afford it.

You might take a look at the Portuguese folders from Filmam. My MAM Tipica has become one of my favorite carries for its big, broad sheepsfoot blade, perfect for soft cheeses, or for spreading the cream cheese after you have sliced the bagel.

The Moras belong at the top of this list along with Opinel, in my opinion. Then you will probably want a Marttiini or two. I think the Svord peasant folders belong in this category, too, as well as the Condor knives, for just a bit more money.

This list is far from exhaustive. I keep learning about new knives all the time. Out of necessity, the less-expensive ones get my attention first.
 
Iisakki Aiito was one of hte very first knives I hought several years ago. 1095 steel, 8cm long blade, scandi grind, birch bark handle which never looses grip even when wet. I use it mostly as utility blade at home, but recently got a chance to dress one young deer with it and it was perfect for the task. I payed some 50€ for new one back then. I stripped the kurouchi since as it did not hold too well.

The spoon was made by my father.

Swiss Army Knife. Basic pattern, twin blades, scissors, can and bottle opener, corkscrew, awl.

Also, I would suggest a traditional American bowie. Also, Italian stiletto.
