One aspect of custom knife addiction is the need for patience wrt delays between ordering/paying and getting the knife. I got to wondering why I'm going prematurely grey and realised I've paid a total of $1750 for knives I haven't received yet!

I usually don't ask for anything down. I tell the person when it is ready, scan and send them a pic for approval, then send it out. If it's a MO, i wait till I get it or sometimes if I know the people, ill send it before i get the MO. If I do something really fancy or that needs costly materials, I will ask for some of the material cost up front.

Part of the problem is the shipping time to this corner of the world, although one $700 folder got lost in the mail and is getting remade. The guys in G,B and U who complain that a knife hasn't shown up after 3 days should try it from this side of the pond

Ferret,

I really envy you. See, I am usually just the opposite, multiple customs soon to arrive and I somehow have to scrounge up the money

save your money up, go to knife shows.....
Immediate gratification! Handle what you are going to buy before you buy it.....I could go on....Think Eugene, Oregon....Apr 20th

This I can understand all too well. Just my luck to be born on the wrong side of the globe to be a knife knut

Ferret, I would recommend FedEx for costly knives - it sure costs $$$ but at least your blood pressure stays normal. My last few customs all came through ok.

Hey Tom, do you think you'll ever make your way to the east coast? By the time I pay for the ticket to Oregon & back, then buy the knife.... well, that gets to be a right expensive knife.

I agree, though... shows are the way to go. I like immediate gratification.

The problem for guys like Ferret and myself is that coming to a knife show anywhere in the states is going to cost us thousands of $$ before we even get to the first table...

Now, for 1200$ for the plane ticket I can get some fine cutlery...
