Must own knives?

What knives should everyone own in their collection? Are there any knives like that?

Personally, I would say that everyone must own at least one:

Benchmade AXIS lock
Spyderco lockback
SOG fixed blade
SOG/Leatherman multitool
CRK Sebenza
Benchmade balisong
HI Khukuri
Any Swamp Rat/Busse/Strider
Buck 110
ATC Tomahawk

Anything to add? Anything you would remove?

I never had much of a feel for big blades. I gave my SOG Seal 2000 to my brother-in-law for his gear bag, and I have a kukri, but it's a cheapie wall-hanger.

I agree with the rest, and I would add that a few small fixed blades can be useful, like my Running Dog Jr. Exec or Dozier Canoe, or a Spyderco Moran or Perrin.

Neck knives: Emerson La Griffe or, for real class, a Perrin original. Maybe a Busse Assault Shaker.

The big gap I see in your list is autos. I know they are a problem for some people, questionable legality and some with inflated prices. I didn't have any myself until recently. Maybe a Microtech SOCOM Elite Manual, at least. Then an LUDT or Amphibian.

A custom Winston Fixed Blade:D

A Surefire (I know its not a knife)

A Buck 110 (Although I don't own one:eek: )

A Swamp Rat

A Old Timer

You pretty much covered allot of the standards above, but everyone should have one of each above

High on my list would be an Ed Fowler Pronghorn, and a Don Fogg tanto.

I don't know about knives that everyone should own, I am only interested in the knives and makers I like. My tastes are my own and many would find them peculiar and excessively expensive. I only own two of the knives on your list (leatherman and a BM710 axis lock), but I rarely carry or use them. They were also both gifts, otherwise I would probably not have them at all.

Hmmm...I never really considered an auto considering most people don't have access to them...like me. :(

Some sort of multi-tool, preferably something like a Leatherman or a Swiss army knife.

A serrated Cold Steel anything (Love their Vaquero Grande).

Buck or Schrade lockback.

Axis lock with premium steel like 710HS, 730CFHS, 806D2, 921, or 941D2CF.

A kerambit or La Griffe (now on my 2003 wish list!).

Machete or kukri.

A good custom.
A Randall.
An HI Khukuri.
A Sog Fixed blade.
A 'Hawk from ATC.
Something from Buck.
The all important SAK or Leatherman tool.
And A Busse/Strider, whichever one is your preference.

I agree with Don concerning customs. Play around with a bunch of knives until you know what you like and then have a custom made to your own specs. If you do a small fixed blade/neck knife style and choose your maker wisely you can have your very own unique blade for the price of some manufacturers folders. Tons more fun, too. :)

I only have 2 from the list....a Spyderco Navigator.sweet little lockback, and a BM556

A SOG Seal 2000
A SOG Tigershark
A SOG PowerLock
A Spyderco Police model
A Spyderco Delica
A REKAT Sifu
A REKAT Carnivour
A Cold Steel Vaquero Grande
A Cold Steel Tanto
A Buck 110
An Ontario/Bagwell Hell's Belle
And yes...A CR Sebenza.

A SOG multitool man.
I haven't seen one that comes close from Leatherman.

The only things on your list I don't have is a Sebbie and a SOG fixed.
I would add Microtech Socom Elite
SAK Rucksack
Camillus MaddMaxx

This is a pretty good topic. Here goes:

A good SAK or two
A Buck 110
A good quality slip joint multiblade in a traditional pattern (stockman, canoe, trapper etc.)with something other than synthetic scales and with carbon steel blades
A Spyderco folder or two or three
A Benchmade AFCK (large or small but an older Spydie hole liner lock)
A KABAR Marine Corp. fixed blade
A Butterfly knife
A large fixed blade (9" or so) Bowie knife

Every-day small fixed -- Busse Active Duty
Every-day small folder -- Mayo TnT (DT raindrop damascus)
Dress folder -- Jeff Chaffee warncliff
Camping fixed -- Entrek Companion
Camping folder -- MoD Trident

When I can only carry 1 -- Kershaw Boa.
Lounging around the house -- A.G. Russell featherlite one-hand.

Leatherman Micra on my keychain, Leatherman of some sort stashed pretty much everywhere.

I've got a bunch of other knives, but I'm not entirely sure what I need them for.

Mike

Microtech Socom
Syderco Endura/Delica
spyderco Police
Emerson CQC7
Emerson Commander
Gerber Mark I
Gerber Mark II
Benchmade bali (31-4X)
Buck 110
REKAT Sifu
KABAR USMC
Cold Steel tanto in San Mai
Mayo TnT
Snody Ronin

One Opinel
One Laguiole

Ed Gordon's list is very good. I would take his list, change the AFCK to any BM axis lock (personal preference being the mini-griptilian), delete the balisong and the 9" bowie, and add a GB Wildlife Hatchet or Small Forest Axe.
