I agree with Don concerning customs. Play around with a bunch of knives until you know what you like and then have a custom made to your own specs. If you do a small fixed blade/neck knife style and choose your maker wisely you can have your very own unique blade for the price of some manufacturers folders. Tons more fun, too. :)

I have a couple custom fixed blades, but so far my luck with custom folders has been pretty poor. I showed some interest in a custom folder at a gunshow, but before he would show me the knife, he asked me if I was prepared to spend at least $850 on a pocket knife, when I told him $500 was my limit, he told me I wasn't ready for a custom, and sat back down, without offering to let me examine any of the knives in his case. I must have left a dozen or more messages for Ken Onion, and never got a responce. I talked to some folks here, who reccomended Carson and Obenauf, Carson said he was backlogged and wasn't taking orders, I emailed and called Obenauf a dozen times over the course of several weeks and managed to get him on the phone four times. Each time he took my contact info, promising to check the availability of stuff and call me back with an estimate in a few days, he never did. It's been a month or more since I called him last, and I don't think I'll bother anymore. So far, I've been pretty content with my Sebie and MT-LCC's, and given the attatude I've gotten from the custom folder guy's I've encounterd thus farr, I'll probably stick with production stuff.

Well, then, you obviously haven't met you know who from you know where. I can't promote him anymore out of fear of being a groupie. Sounds like a job for _____ at ________.
