I have been making knives for a while and always loved trying new things. I have seen a lot of knives on this very forum that have the mustard finish patina on them. So I decided to try it. Unfortunatly for me my projects didn't look anything like the ones here. Am I missing something? Is there some secret that is being kept from me or is it just karma seeking its revenge sence I'm usually a mayo kinda guy? The steel I use the mostly is O1. Can you fellers tell me what's up? Always love to see your pics! Thanks!

What kind of steel are you putting it on? I don't think it works on all steels. I've also found that you need to put it on very thinly, I think it must need to mix with air or something.

Carbon steel. Thin is right, the air needs to get to it. I did this with vinegar and mustard mixed together, then dabbed it on 3X with a towel.

Here is one on my BK-2 with just mustard dabbed on with a brush.

I have my ESEE-4 currently sprayed down with stripper. I was planing to use the mustard finish. If I use vinegar also, do I mix the mustard with the vinegar, or put them on seperately. Is there a ratio to follow, or just what looks good to me?

Obviously my first try at this, but I've been wanting to try it out so when I got the ESEE I knew it was just a matter of time.

Thanks for any advice.
