Well, since I've seen some of the finishes put on knives using mustard.
And, since I happen to have a couple too many homebrew beers last night.
I just happen to have this Charlie Ridge knife that spends more time in my pack and in the sheath than it does the light of day.
So, this is what happened.

I actually like how it turned out and I think it will see more use now.
My son I think wants to steal it because he said now its and Alien knife, if you look close it kinda looks like an Alien head/body on the blade.

Ammohouse,

Looks great! I've done a couple of mine too. I personally like Gulden's Spicy Brown......

I did not see the alien face. :grumpy: However, if you look real close, you can see a profile of Jimmy Hoffa in there.;) I have never wanted to patina any knife with mustard beer, but whatever concoction you brewed, it really came out nice! Thanks for the pics, now I see why some guys like that dark lady Tina.

The red circle is what my sons says looks like an alien...crazy kids, maybe he's been in my homebrew!

I saw that when I first looked at it. Are you sure this isn't extra terrestrial? The aliens are recruiting your knife :D

I did something like that with my Ontario RAT-3 that I stripped. The tiger-stripe pattern didn't come out as pronounced as yours (maybe because of the D2 blade) and I sanded it off with 400 grit paper.

I saw the alien as soon as you mentioned it. I like what you did. Fun stuff. Use it well.

 That looks great! I've never seen one like it and never imagined it could come out that way, with such a pronounced pattern.

I experimented with a mustard patina on an Opinel a while ago. I smeared some regular yellow mustard on the blade and then dabbed it with a fingertip. The results were wonderful; the blade had multicolored highlights and looked very much like it was color case hardened.

But the next time I put it on the leather belt on my belt sander to power strop it, the attractive part of the patina came off, leaving it merely dark and kind of dull. :(

After seeing your results, I think I'll be pulling a new Mora Tri-Flex Craftsman out of the knife drawer and giving it another try.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

How did you get the pattern like that? this is just your standard smile you've got frenches mustard right?

Cool Pattern! I did the same thing not too long ago, I did not get such a wild and pronounced pattern as you did though. The top is mustard then a lime juice soak, and the bottom is a vinegar soak and a lime juice soak.

Yep, just standard frenchs mustard.
The first layer I just made squiggly lines and left it on for about 8hrs, then washed it off.
Then I did the vertical lines and left it on for about 4hrs, then washed it off.
I hope it stays on the blade, we'll see how long it lasts.

Yes, homebrew is fun!!!
I'm still a rookie, I've only made 4 batches...but I really like doing it.
