MWKK05 Thread

:) Ferrous- for your edification: My opening statement (in boldface) refers to my delight upon learning that MamaV (aka Ginger V.) and her daughter will be attending, so that Peeps would not be the sole "sister" present. ;)

Glad to hear it Gin! Peeps had expressed interest, but I didn't know how comfortable she'd be being the only female. She's at work now, but I emailed her. Hopefully she can add herself to the list when she gets home.

HD- It occurred to me, that its kinda silly to ship lumber across an entire state, just so I can carry it back to WV when I move. Howzabout I get with you this fall sometime and pick some up when I'm a "local"? The rain kept us away from Vandalia also. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to contact you- it was Peeps fault! :p

Svashtar, we're holding it at Nasty's house again, in western Ohio. Hope you can make it. :)

Sure do... I live right across the river! I grew up in Charleston, but have been living in the area for a long time. I know quite a few Nitronians ~ I bet we know some of the same people!

Thanks for the welcome, hollowdweller (though you'll have to forgive me if I inadvertently refer to you as "hollerdweller")! ;) It's great to make acquaintance with a fellow mountaineer. :)

Btw, I'm sorry I kept MacHete so busy ~ I'm sure he'll hook up with you next visit! :)

No problem. I work in Charleston right across from the Mall.

Nasty,

I still need to contact Eureka and get tent parts. Not only were the poles bent but it actually ripped the fly off the top of the tent so I need to get a new fly also!

I knew you were stressed when I said "Your fly is down" and you didn't even laugh. At least you've got a year to get ready.

I'm thinking a refrigerator box staked to the ground with a bag inside would be best!

Yeah, it took on a whole new meaning. ;) That was some wicked wind let me tell you!! Next time maybe I'll use rebar for stakes!!

If it's good enough for the guy who lives under the overpass it's good enough for me. Good ol' one star accomodation.

If you wax the box with an old candle, it becomes drip resistant and therefore you can call it a 1.5 star hotel.

Drip resistant...are you talking about their clientele?

A motion has been made to hold next year's MWKK at the same location (Dayton, OH), but on Memorial Day weekend. If we contain it to about the same number of participants, I second the motion.

Side benefits include better weather, more time for the hoopla and that we can hold a Birthday party for BrianinChi.

Yes, we can toss him in the pond once for each year!

Anyone care to make this the official signup thread?

Attendees:
Nasty
Tom Linton (bringing the oil I presume)
RoadRunner (bringing safety glasses)
Semper Fi (bringing bandaids)
Ferrous (bringing cool toys)
Trevor (bringing his pen & ink?)
MacHete (bringing Peeps and that's no duck story!)
Mamav (bringing daughter and schoolbooks)
Hollowdweller (going for it and bringing tent pieces)
BrianinChi (bringing dry clothes and a fire extinguisher)
Svashtar *Possible* (bringing nothing to avoid fear of getting ripped off)
:D

Hey, I would love to bring a few knives to share, but would welcome input on the best way to transport them. I have plenty of rifle cases that would hold several khuks with good protection easily, but from what I have heard traveling with those is like begging the airline employees to swipe your stuff. Any suggestions? If it were anywhere in the West, Northwest or Southwest I would just load up and drive there, but Ohio is a bit of a trek. What would be the best way to check a few khuks and still have a good chance of their being there when the flight landed?

Thanks for any feedback.

Regards,

Norm

well, ya might email Nasty and see if he'd letcha ship them out to his place...If not, I know how ya feel. If I hadta fly. I woudnt have brought so much stuff!!

Keith

Norm, I'd offer to pick them up for you cause I'm driving, but I'll be in Monterey in Sep....probably a little too soon.

So my daughter wants to know just how far it is to Cedar Point roller coaster heaven from your place Nasty....are there any others who would be interested in taking a side trip there....I REALLY don't want to ride   But a Mom has to do what a Mom has to do :(

As far as major attractions in Nastyville I'd highly reccomend a hike in John Bryan State park in the canyon of the Miami River. I went last year and it was beautiful. I took some pix if anybody wants to post them I could dig them out again.

Also the town of Yellow Springs is very cool. Lots of little craft shops and home grown eateries.

Also the airborn tent sideshow and scattered gear hunt after dark was fun and challenging :D

is in the north, on Lake Erie. Nasy's place is on the central wast side of the state. So couple hours drive.

You can use mapquest or some such to calc the time/dist btwn Dayton and Sandusky.

Norm, you should call the airline and ask what is necessary to have your check-in bags HAND-CHECKED with you present, so they may be locked when they are done.
Then when you go to the ticket counter, you can ask to have your check-in hand-checked, they'll do their thing, slap a sticker on it, and you can lock it.
I'd check with them first before even buying a ticket.

I'd be interested in driving down for a few days and meeting you folks. I could bring some of my collection. I have a pair of antique khuks. Last time I was in Dayton was to see the Air Force museum. :)

Does anyone have a couple spare teenagers who would like to tag along up there?? Sounds like we'll have to check the place out.

First - You would be more than welcome to ship them here...no problem at all (insure them).

Second - I spent a lot of time there when I was young. It is along the coast of Lake Erie and a fair drive from here, especially when "King's Island" and their water theme park "The Beach" is only 45 minutes south of me. They are both always in competition for best coaster, etc...

Third - The USAF Museum is nthing short of *awesome*. I've been there 20 times in the 20 years I've lived here and never had the same trip...15 minutes from my home.

Finally - Yellow Springs is a very different town. Much to see, beautiful nature stuff...more lesbians per capita than anywhere else in the US.

Ya'll come down now...y'hear?

Does Yellow Springs have a college there?

Decades ago (literallly), I knew a woman who taught dance (I think) in Yellow Springs. Took me to a reallly nice forest preserve/park place.

Small town atmosphere? Strangers say "hey" to you? Like that?

I might be able to handle a trip to Cedar Point. It used to be an annual pilgramage for my brother and I before I joined the Army. He might even meet us there.

RR, some company would be great. I'll probably have to check out the Beach too. In fact I'm sure by the time we leave, Karen will have all the coasters mapped from here to there and back again
