My 1 of 50 CPM M4 Rift May Be Gone

Well, I was lucky enough to get my order in for the 1 of 50 Benchmade Rift in CPM M4 steel. I really like the design, as my standard model has great fit and finish, a very thin edge, and the 154CM tested at 61 RC, which explains why it is such a good perfoming knife. I love CPM M4, so the design and steel together was great to me. I got #45 of 50 delivered to me on 12/7, and to my dismay when I open up the box my early birthday present has vertical blade play and a stiff Axis lock bar and stiff opening blade. I call Benchmade and their customer service was excellent as they set up for UPS to pick up the knife and overnight it to them to try to get it back to me by my birthday on 12/15. While I sent it I asked if while they were fixing the blade play they could get it to swing as smooth and freely as my standard Rift and most any other Axis lock I've used, thin the edge angle to save me time when I rebevel it, and to put in torx thumb studs to make it quicker for me to remove the thumbstuds for when I sharpen it. On Monday I called in and they said the replaced the liners and the Axis lock and it was nice and smooth with no blade play. They said they also sharpened it and put in the torx thumbstuds for me. They said it was going out overnight so it would arrive on my Birthday Tuesday, 12/15. I was elated and extremely happy with customer service.

Then comes 12/15 and Fed Ex. My wife is a stay at home mom, and after helping out at my daughter's school in the morning by 11:45 she was home and my Father in law came over to hang out for the afternoon. USPS had dropped off a priority package that is a present for my daughter, but no Fed Ex. She smokes and goes out the front door to do this every 1/2 hour or so, and never saw a package or heard a knock or ring of the doorbell. My wife did leave from about 2-3 PM to buy food for my Birthday dinner, but my Father in law was there the whole time. When I got home at 4:15 I called Benchmade to check on the status as the knife wasn't there, and it took about 15 minutes to get a customer service agent that tracked the package on the Fed Ex site for me only to say it was due to be delivered 12/15. I asked if she could please e mail me the tracking number so I could track it myself later if Fed Ex didn't show up, but I just figured I must be at the end of their route. I had a great birthday dinner and forgot about the whole Fed Ex thing until about 7:30 when I started to get worried.

At 7:30 I tracked the package online and saw that it had been supposedly left at my door at 12:52 PM, when my wife and Father in law were both there. Why didn't the customer service rep at Benchmade tell me that piece of the info, as she had said she was electronically tracking the package and I know she saw that note, but all she said was that it was due that day. I would have called Fed Ex immediately to check on it. Anyway, I called Fed Ex and got out the flashlight to look around everywhere in front of my house and each adjacent neighbor (the place to the right of mine is vacant). The Fed Ex guy said sometimes they leave these packages that require no signature with nieghbors, so while on the phone with Fed Ex I talk to my next door nieghbor to my left that I'm pals with and he said no package was left at his door, and no one was home around 12:52 PM. Now Fed Ex says the best they can do is have their driver retrace his route and call me in the next day. After that I went to the nearest side street with the number 3 in their address like mine, and he reported nothing being left at his place.

It now appears I am screwed. Maybe Benchmade figured no signature required would allow me to get the knife for my Birthday on time if no one was home, but in this case it may have allowed a bozo driver to either give someone else my 1 of 50 knife that can't be replaced or kept it for himself. If the knife doesn't turn up I don't want a refund, I want an M4 Rift. I hear Benchmade keeps the first 3 of any run, so they have 3 replacements. For the great price that blade was had for I sure as hell don't want credit as I don't want any other Benchmades right now. I love the Rift and I really love CPM M4, and getting money back for a knife I bought and had in my hands but had lost in transit due to Benchmade's QC being bad is unacceptable. The only other Benchmade knife in M4 I bought was a 760 which had a blade so far off center that it was hitting the handle, so I have had bad luck with the QC on Benchmade's M4 knives. My standard Rift is flawless, and it looks like the other 1 of 50 M4 Rifts were very good, but I was the unlucky sap to get a bad apple Rift. I really hope Benchmade finds a way to offer a replacement M4 Rift, otherwise I might not be buying from them again. I realize this was a Fed Ex error on delivery (though signature confirmation is something I like), and that production knives will not all be perfect, but on a 1 of 50 run how does a knife leave the factory with vertical blade play and a very sticky lock? I also put in the notes to the vendor in my order to check for QC issues, especially blade play, but they said it was so busy that day they must have overlooked the note. Oh well, we'll see how this shakes out, but this is deflating. I thought I'd have a happy birthday with a knife I've really been looking forward to and I only got a continuation of my bad luck. I was hospitalized for 4 days with pnuemonia, and missed 2 weeks of work due to it as my lungs were still pnuemonia riddled and partially collapsed for over a week after I got out of the hospital. Then last Friday night I step on one of my daughter's very expensive toys (at least we were able to glue it back together) that she had covered with stuffed animals and got two good sized gashes in my feet with fat coming out of them. Then they had to spend about a 1/2 hour digging around in my foot to get a piece of the toy that was lodged in my foot out of there. Needless to say that is not feeling to good right now. Then the knife I wanted so bad, and actually had in my hands for a short while disappears. It has been a rough few weeks for me, I really hope they can cheer me up be finding this knife or replacing it with another one.

Wow, sorry to hear that dude. I hope it works out for you, I know how much you wanted that blade and you waited for it long time too.
Happy BD and better luck in the future.

A few years back I used to work as a Network Specialist for a small company, and I somehow got drafted into a glorified mail boy during the Holiday Season.

This is the season for UPS, USPS, and FedEx to lose your stuff.
Hopefully it is hidden behind some packages in one of the delivery trucks.

My experience is that the closer to Christmas you get, the more likely the electronic shipping is a big fat lie.
I don't care what company, I don't care what tracking system, they either outright lie about tracking packages, or they become totally inept with all the seasonal help they hire at this time of year.

I am sorry for your loss. I have several packages in the mail right now and I hope they are not lost. But I know that at this time of year the chances for something going terribly wrong skyrocket.

I lost 2 low production Kershaw Sprints due to crackhead neighbors.... it always sucks. It has been 2 years and I am still mad about it. Hang in there dude

I've followed your posts about this Rift, and was glad to hear that you had gotten it fixed by Benchmade. This is a real bummer hear. Have you contacted Fed Ex this morning to talk with the driver? I once had a package show as delivered that was actually still on the truck. Keep us informed.

All the mailing systems are completely FUBAR at this time of year, so don't give up hope just yet - it might still show up. Definitely contact fedex about it again though.

Man, that sucks...As hard as it is to wait that long for something, you have to send it back and then its gone...man thats a nightmare. But i hope it shows up man, and i hope you heal up

The USP man left my neighbor's package at my front door by mistake and I didn't see it for 2 days since I mainly use the garage door. I'm sure my neighbor thought it was lost until I found it and got it to him on the third day. Let's hope it's something that simple.

My wife bought me a very nice gift and it was "delivered on porch" according to FEDEX. This was supposedly at 7:52PM. I noticed it right away on the website and checked my porch at 8:22 - No package in sight! We were home and the dogs always bark like mad when someone is around the front door. Either someone followed the FEDEX guy around and was stealing or they were never there.

What a bummer when this crap happens.

Fed Ex called and said the driver "threw" the knife inside an open door where lots of construction was going on with several workers. This describes my neighbor's house to the right (we are in condos, but they are 1750 sq. ft. each with lots of space between doors with addresses clearly marked), as the tenant just moved out and they are replacing the decks. By the time they called me this morning my wife had left to bring my daughter to school and serve as a taxi for a class field trip to the local gymnastics place, so there is no chance for her to try to talk to the workers next door until this afternoon. Fed Ex claims the driver will retrace his steps to find the package. It seems crazy to me that a driver would throw a package through an open door into a house where construction was going on with a lot of random workers (a house clearly marked with the WRONG address at that), but I bet Fed Ex has some unreasonable time per package delivery that they hold drivers to so the drivers feel pressure to just make a delivery they push on the drivers rather than making sure everything is delivered to the correct address and in a safe location to keep the chances of someone stealing the package to a minimum (I live in a good area without many theaves, but I prefer a slip on my door and a trip to the local Fed Ex warehouse to pick up my package rather than having it thrown in an open door with lots of construction workers, even if it was my house and not the nieghbor's). Hopefully we can locate it and the workers are honest. If not Benchmade model 950BK-1001 #45 of 50 will probably live it's life as a prybar and screwdriver. Luckily a guy on the Benchmade forums was cool enough to offer #38 of 50 for the original pourchase price we paid if my knife can't be found, so good will is out there I'll be able to get an M4 Rift even if my knife is lost. Of course I'll have to wait to get paid by Fed Ex on the claim before I can do that, but it is great. I did hear however that Benchmade keeps numbers 1 through 3 on these limited runs, and I think they should be sending their customers one of those in a situation like I just ran into. That seems very unlikely at this point, but we'll see. This is very frustrating to say the least, but at least it will work out one way or another to where I have an M4 Rift in the end.

Wow, I hope the workers are too busy to notice & that the package is just "sitting" there.

I feel your pain though. I haven't had a lost package, but have had some close calls. One time the mailman (A temp), brought my mail to the door, but left a box containing a lg. CGG Seb in our mailbox (Why, I have no clue). Thinking there's nothing in the mailbox, I didn't check & we left for the weekend. The Seb sat in the mailbox for 2 days/nights, but fortunately was still there.

My neighbors have gotten my knives & have kindly dropped them off (We've lived at this house for almost 12 yrs now & pretty much know everyone on the street). However, UPS delivered my Umnum 2 streets down (Same street #, but the street name's no where close). Fortunately, that person brought it over.

I still have my BM 760 M4 & love the blade steel. I can only imagine how nice an axis lock with M4 will be.

I sincerely hope this has a happy ending.

I had FedEx tell me that the delivery guy had "retraced his steps" and swore he delivered my knife once- I got my knife a week and a half later when a guy two blocks away got back from vacation! The name of his street didn't look or sound like mine and his house and surroundings didn't look like mine. I was just lucky nobody took it while he was on vacation and he was nice enough to bring it over. It was one day before they were due to pay off on the insurance- I almost let them I was so mad.

Damn gunmike1 you have had some bad luck, but it will now turn around! Sure the Knife will be in your hands very shortly! Keep my fingers crossed for you!

Well, the guys next dooe were good and gave the unopened package to my wife. They said the guy literally walked in, stared at them, then just chucked the package across the floor and left. They thought it was pretty odd. I am pissed and filed a complaint on the driver. I hope he doesn't chuck the Sharpmaker I bought for my father in law for Christmas that he is delivering tomorrow on the ground like that or there will be lots of ceramic shards in the box. I guess it all worked out. We'll see when I open it up when I get home to check how good Benchmade's repairs are. If they live up to their rep they should be great.
