Well, I was able to take a couple hours this afternoon and give the bowdrill a shot. This is probably my third time trying a bowdrill fire so I wasn't expecting much, but I got something right and surprised myself with an ember and subsequent fire!
I used mostly cottonwood though my spindle may have been elm, I'm not quite sure. A chunk of green plum for the handhold, and jute, dry mullein leaves, and dry grass for tinder. It took a couple tries to get comfortable with the form again and get the bow string adjusted correctly, once I got there and started seeing some nice smoke I ran off to collect tinder before giving it another go that ended up being the successful one!
Pictures!
Materials.
The Patch was a touch small for the baton job but it got er done.
Ready!
Prepped for notching.
I thought this notch was too large but it worked so I don't know what to think...
Tinder. The mullein was just a random guess for tinder but it actually held an ember really well.
Smoke!
Holy cow an ember!
I started with just the jute, but the whole bundle probably would have been better. I ended up wrapping the jute and ember in the rest of the tinder right after this picture.
I was too excited and forgot to take a picture of the blowing it into a flame process... but my first successful friction fire!
Thank you very much for the challenge Hasco. I probably never would have gotten out there and gave the bowdrill another try without this challenge. Now that I've had some success, I'm definitely going to practice.
