I got my Livesay today, and sufficed to say, it barely met up to my expectations. No regrets, but it got me thinking...

What is your worst/most disappointing knife purchase?

Not because of company/dealer/store...just because of the knife itself.

Keep in mind, one bad piece does not accurately reflect upon a makers capabilities!

What was it about the Livesay that you did not care for. Did you get a chance to test it, or was it fit and finish that was not up to par? Also, what model was it? Inquiring minds want to know.

My most disappointing purchase would have to be my SOG Sogwinder which I picked up for the low low price of $75

.

The action was and is still very smooth, and the lockup after 2,000+ (seriously) sometimes abusive openings is still as tight as ever. But let me tell you, rubber handles that peel royally suck.

I even ended up spending $10 to send the knife back to SOG through my local dealer only to have the knife mailed to me after at least a month..with epoxy over parts of the blade, bolster, and lockbar, plus smeared across the grips.

After inspecting the knife, I also noticed scratches and nicks that weren't there when I sent it in. Plus the rubber handle slab was still coming off, only the one on the other side was now joining the party!!

I guess you could say that I was, and am, dissapointed

Let me be the first to ask -- did you post about your disappointments on the manufacturers' forums? If so what kind of response did you get? If not why don't you?

Newt Livesay's forum is at http://server3.ezboard.com/blivesayknives

SOG's forum is right here at this website.

Keeping in the spirt of the post. As a new knife collector, My most dispointing knife purchase was one I bought on ebay. Advertized as a Puma, but it was a cheap clone.....I should have looked closer, no wonder I got it so cheap. Oh, while I'm exposing myself here, I admit I got a Franklin Mint, Harley knife, you know the pretty looking ones that weight about a pound.

I'd have to agree with Llamedos on the EDI Genesis I. Had to send it back.
I couldn't even hold it loosely in a saber grip with out disengaging the VERY exposed liner lock.
I think it was a well made knife and like the price and the way it looks, but it's totally unusable with the lock so exposed.
It'd be a great knife to modify (ala Knifehead)

I will agree with Llamedos and badpenny. The EDI Genesis I had the worst lockup ever. I sent it back, it holds now but I don't trust it. What really burned my butt is it won best knife from a couples of knife mags. If this one was best I sure would hate to have seen the worst. I got cheap throw away knives that lock up better.

The most disapointing knife purchase? In terms of design or execution?

In execution that would have been a small Benchmade AFCK. I paid full retail, $126 (I didn't know any better at the time) from the factory.

The knife I received had pock marks in the blade and the handles where chaffed. I couldn't get it so it would open smoothly but not have wobble problems. The detent wouldn't hold the blade closed securely.

I sent it back, eventually, (that's another story) I received a replacement. It wasn't significantly better. I got rid of it for $60. I should have sent it back too and demanded a full refund, oh well.

A few years later I was all set to go out and buy a Benchmade Sentinel, looooved the looks. I went to a show with the money ready to buy, every one I looked at (about 8 from different dealers, small show) had some variation of rough edges, burrs on the metal, uneven anodizing, scales pulling away from the
frame, lock that took two hands or a hammer to unlock.

Thankfully I didn't buy.

I only have one "disappointment". Not a complaint, just a "well, whaddaya expect for X amount of dollars". I found a CRK&T Blitz dirt cheap and said what the heck. Well, the thing weighed a TON and the liner lock went clear across the knife, where it promptly jammed and stayed. $%#@^!!!!! Like I said, "whaddaya expect for X amount of dollars"

When I first started collecting knives a couple of years ago.....I purchased a "Bokermatic." It sounded like a really cool knive..."not an autmatic" but sold with the attributes of one. It was flimsy, hard-to-use, and truly a novelty item.....I use it to cut boxes and try to keep the blade from popping out all the time.....

Benchmade Pinnacle. Forget that it's a Sebenza wanna-a-be, I could not believe the poor fit, finish, lock-up and overall quality. Fortunately, I bought from a reputable dealer (advertiser here on BF) and he promptly gave me a refund, no hassle. He came right out and said, some BMs are good and some are not so good.

I purchased a Pocket Hobbit a few years ago and though I liked the design of the blade and handle, I think the Rolling Lock lever was difficult to operate and the overall finish of the knife was not on par with other factory knives............so I dumped it................but..............REKAT came out with the Pioneer II and revised the position of the lever, is using better looking G-10 for the scales and it looks like the overall finish has really improved. Now they are great knives.

Ron, you are incredible! So many times, on these forums, I see you more than willing to service customers even though you didn't have to. Just simply amazing. Wish I had met you when I started collecting knives.

On to the point of the thread, there have been many purchases that I have been disappointed with. Blame it on youth, ignorance, etc. I have a box full of "survival" knives that I will never open to play with, let alone use. But the one of the knives I bought recently, even with the aid of years of wisdom on my side, which disappointed me, was the... well, actually, it's a toss-up between my Al Mar Shadow IV and Boker Orion.
For an AL Mar, the Shadow felt really cheap. The handle was so plasticky and the joint lines where the handle mould did not meet properly are so obvious. All in all, it looked and felt really cheap. Not at all like the Quicksilver which I picked up years ago when I didn't really know who the heck this "Al Mar" person was.

The Orion was also a fit and finish problem. The blade edge was not evenly done, the anodizing and surface finish on the blade were uneven and rough in some spots, you can see areas on the carbon fibre handle where the grind was not done evenly, most of the allen screws had their heads partially stripped and the opening and closing felt really rough.

My most dissapointing knife purchase involved a trip halfway round the world!

I went to Europe for vacation after college graduation (hey that rhymed).

I saw England, I saw France, I saw your mama's...oops - sorry

I saw Italy too. Went to Venezia (Venice) and was looking at all the nice little knife shops. I really wanted to get a "stilletto" (sorry if not spelled right) but after looking and looking I decided they were all wobbly pieces of crap.

So, I decided to get this nice little drop point lockback - nickel silver bolsters, high polish stainless blade and dark hardwood scales.

Very nice - so I thought...
I got home and put it on the shelf and a week later went to look at it...

What tha Fu...?!!!
The locking bar had decided to spontaneously commit suicide!
Boy, was I dissapointed...

I guess this would also fall under "most mysterious knife failure" as well.

Well, I'm very impressed by this move by Ron and will be giving him a call soon

.

And I'd like to clarify that the only reason I payed $10 to have it sent back is because my dealer led me to believe he'd send it back for free..then he suprised me with a bill when the knife was returned.

That and most of the epoxy was able to be removed except for some on the backspring.

And there was one plus, the knife was as sharp as hell when I got it back and I never even asked for it to be sharpened

Which model Livesay did you get?

I'm sure Newt WILL make it right whatever it was.

The worst knife or knives I ever purchased were three of the Timberline folders with the Nealy Lock (sp?). The three different sizes I pruchased were really inexpensive and at first they seemed nice but all three locking devices fail to work properly after only a short time. I still see them advertised, save your money!

My Masters of Defense "Hornet" knife.

It bound up so badly, and 3 calls
to the company have remained un-returned.

So now I carry an Elishewitz, and love it.
