Yahoo ! A box appeared on my desk at work today and yipes, it had the Weld address on it ! I just ordered my custom folding hunter last Friday and here it was ! I guess being 15 miles away doesn't hurt, but jeez, that was quick. As hoped, the knife is beautiful, nickel silver bolsters, water buffalo scales and a BG42 blade. The blade has the new Buck Edge2000 and it is hair scaring sharp, I kid you not. It "pushed" thru a sheet of paper like my Spydie Moran or Simonich Cetan does; THAT is sharp ! I also opted for the finger grooves and was very happy with the way it feels in the hand. Lockup and fit/finish are superb, very close tolerances. This is one pretty AND utilitarian knife. Yes, thats right, I'm going to carry and use it !
Along with the knife (and tan leather flap sheath) came a large certificate signed by CJ Buck, Al Kavalauskas(vp mrktg), Joe Hauser (Mr Quality) and all the crew at Pete's Custom shop. I also received a Certificate of Authenticity signed by (please forgive any errors on my part) Dana Queen, who I think was the craftsman who assembled my knife. There is an order number on the bottom right of the card too.
OK, did I say that I like the knife yet ?
Thanks to all of you at Buck who had a hand in this project, I'm eagerly waiting for future expansion into more models in this program. Keep up the GREAT work, oh, did I say THANKS ?
PS anyone who is trying to decide about getting one of these with your specs; wait no more, get off the fence, you won't regret it.

I too was greeted by a UPS package from "BK" when I got home from work tonight. Mine is a fingergrooved, nickle-silver bolster, ram's horn handle without pins, BG-42 bladed 110. It is imprinted with "Buck Custom Shop U.S.A." on one side and "Designer's Choice" on the other. The blade is also marked "BG-42". And as Brian stated, these come with the new Buck Edge2000. What impresses most is the feel in the hand. The finger grooves plus the horn provide a three-sided "roughness" which really sits well in the hand. I have great pieces of sambar stag on my 1989 damascus 110 but this new one feels even better.
I didn't receive the big certificate Brian mentioned, but I did receive a nice authentication card signed by Dana Queen. She's done a bang up job on this knife... superlative

Nice!

What's the deal with the no-pins versions? Is the frame just as rigid? What is in place of the pins, or are the pins just underneath, or what?

Joe

Well Joe, mine also is w/o pins and it is still very rigid. The no pins refers to the pins holding the scales on, as in a regular 110 with the wooden scales. I guess they epoxy or glue the scale in place (?). The frame is identical in all other respects to the standard one and thus strong as all get out. I had forgotten how nice and solid the 110 was/is, it's been about 8 or 9 years since I had one. Maybe there are hidden pins too, I'm not sure. I'll bet Pete will amble along and enlighten us .

Bummer , I couldn't view the photos you put up Bob. Got a message that there was some problem with the p=parameter (or something like that). Our scanner is not working, so I can;t show off mine

.
My delivery time was about half of Bob's, cause the Buck factory is only about 15 miles from my front door. But if you discount the distance factor, it seems to take them 4 to 5 working days to do the deed. Of course, as orders increase, YMMV.

OOPS
It works fine now (insert sheepish grin here). That turned out really nice, Bob, mine is sorta from the "Dark Side", as the Asian buffalo horn is mostly black, with a few swirls of white and grey here and there. It will be interesting to see which models and options they offer next.

Brian,

I have a buffalo horn handled knife and the handle is quite attractive. Matter of fact I shaped it myself and affixed it to a faux flint chipped blade cast of dendritic D2 by aa Guild member named Kelley who operates out of the great northwest.

It takes a very high polish and those subtle color lines swirling through the deep black can be somewhat mesmerizing. But I gotta tell you the stuff stinks really bad when you are working with it. Phew! The worse "burnt hair" smell I've ever experienced

!

I choose the sheeps horn aka Ram's horn for it's coloration and the very wavey "roughness" a good slab is characterized by. It really looks nice with the nickle-silver bolsters and the satin finish of the BG-42 blade. It also gives great purchase as does sambar stag both dry and wet. And for a using knife this is important to me. The slabs Ms Queen installed on my knife are superb

Bald1,

We have similar tastes....LOL. The pic of your custom Buck 110 is SWEET
smile.gif
. I like the finger grooves and the RAM Horn.....VERY nice. I was looking around their web site the other week and thought my eyes were bad when I saw that they did customs using BG-42 blades. Great looking classic design with some nice added custom touches.

I have been using the Buck Ranger w/ grooved handle for over 15 yds - aside from the tarnishing that occurs, it is just the way it was when I purchased it. I picked up a 110 the other day (always wanted one, but never purchased one), and the guy gave me a tube of Metalglo polish w/ the knife
smile.gif
. A few minutes later, the ol'Ranger was sparkling like I had never seen before - WOW

.

Thanks for posting the pic - now you got the bug in my ear!

All,

*deep breath*

Brian - it was a pleasure doing business with you - thanks for helping the project.

-=Bob=- Thank you too. Your letter is on its way.

Joe Talmadge - Pins, schminse! We use a high-stregth adhesive to bond the inlays. In some cases (such as Mother of Pearl) we will use a thick paper backing to the inlay to absorb impact and make the bond more durable. (and stronger than all get out)

Brian - I couldn't have put it better myself.

Mr. Shclager - We are promising 2 to 4 weeks for delivery, in the case of the pre test, we were able to ship right away. When our orders pick up, 2 to 4 weeks may be more realisitc. If you order now, I don't be surprised if we shipped in one week or so.

-=Bob=- Great photos.

Brian - Since you're close by,swing on by the plant and take the tour.

I think that's if for the questions. Suggestions are welcome too. Thanks again.

Pete,

Thanks for the e-mail and the opportunity to beta test the site for you and the team

!

Ray,

Brian has already said it, but don't waffle here. The fit and finish on these "Designer's Choice" knives is superlative

!

While I too enjoy the more modern one-handed designs, the classic Buck 110 enjoys an acceptance level that equates to it being a non-threatening belt accessory. This, from my knothole, makes the Buck 110 a mandatory knife in anyones collection, be it small or extensive. The fact that one can now acquire a 110 with options heretofor unavailable coupled with decades of proven field use should make the decision to order relatively easy.

I hope Buck chooses to advertise the existance of PCKS and that it leads to an expansion of models offered this way.

All,
Wow!! My PCKS 110 came today. Ordered on
8/28 and arrived 9/7. The stag is beautiful.
I advise everyone to pass on the handle pins
as the knives are all much more aesthetically
pleasing sans pins. I picked brass cause I
like how it looks with stag and since I plan
to use this razor, I will be able to sand out
any little dings or scratches which occur in
the field.
Someone was talking about the sharpness of
the knife and I must agree. Buck's new Edge
2000 system is a noticeable improvement. This knife is incredibly sharp. PCKS is sure
to be a winner. Thanks, Pete!

Just to throw in my two cents, cause it makes me feel important, The main reason you don't usually see pins is for estetic purposes. In the case of MOP, the pins tend to crack the pearl so they are not normally used.
I have taken the liberty of sharing your comments with Dana Queen, this will make her day!
Thanks!

Pete,
Thank you for the reply about delivery times. After hearing all the of the compliments, I'll probably be placing my order soon, but must pick up my new Gran Prix GTP tomorrow. I'll be figuiring expenses up and what OK doesn't take in sales taxes, could very well go for my new knife. - Brian
