My 1st 3 forged knives

These are the first 3 forged knives I've made.

The larger one was forged with Kricket (much thanks bro) a year ago, and I just got around to finishing it. (New baby) Its 5160.

The smaller two are from my little forge. They're 01, forged from a rod. A very nice forumite sent me the osage! Thanks to you too Matt!

BTW, does anyone know of a good source for Arctic Birch? Its the handle material for the last pic. Really fun to work with, but I've no more of it.

Lookin good, cant wait to get forging Might I suggest tappering your tangs a bit, it cuts the handle wieght and gives them that "custom made look". Birch grows all over Alaska, but we just call it birch, not arctic, same thing? I have never thought of using it as handle mat however, are you shure it isnt to soft for long term usage?

Its very popular with the Scandi crowd. Been used in handles for centuries there. I just don't know where to buy it here in the USA.

I'm not sure if you are aware of the Georgia Knifemakers Guild. But they are all good folks and have a meeting at each others shops every month or so.

You can sure pick up a lot of tricks when you get together with a group of makers.

Often sold as Masur Birch, Nordic Birch, or Artic Birch. Try Ebay, it crops up from time to time. I'll check with Miles Gilmer next time I call him.
