So, what would you call this knife?
bird and Trout?
It started out as a hunter, but I kept making mistakes on it. I think it lost 3/4" or better on the blade width, and at least 1/4" or better on the handle. I'm probably going to just use it as a deboning knife in the kitchen.

Here are the dimensions

4 7/8 from tip to ricasso
8 1/4 overall
1/8" O1
58-59 RC Hardness
Heat Treat by Ken Coats

This is my 1st knife on a grinder. My previous one was done by hand with files. There are a number of 1sts here for me, including:

a)Well, I got to use a grinder a grinder.
b)Hollow Grind
c)Micarta
d)Domed Pins

I cannot believe the number of flaws I have in the knife. It makes me respect those guys even more, that get that extra clean fit and finish.

Some of the things I've learned.

a)Never do "just 1 more pass" on the grinder
b)I can't believe how fast O1 can rust between dunking and bringing it to the grinder
c)Grinding allows you to make mistakes really fast, and take a long time to get them worked out.

So, what would you do different on this knife? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate it. Looking for any feedback (good and bad) to make my next knife better.

thanks a bunch!

I would call it the surgeon because it looks like it could be a surgical knife. I like it

There's something very sleek about this knife. I like the way it looks a lot. Bird and trout seems accurate to me but it almost seems like a filet knife too. It's hard to tell without holding it. Good job!

Well I like it,

Never give up, sometimes a knife just wants to be a certain shape. Don't fight it.
Very sleek and elegant, that's something I always shoot for. Ending up there is good even if you didnt start out with that particular shape in mind.
keep at it.

When I handled and looked over this knife last Sun. the sleek was there. The word
surgeons knife would be a close estimation.
Ken.

Something like that with a 3"ish blade would be a killer bird and trout/EDC knife. Very graceful in a minimalist way. I would buy one.--KV

I'm working on something very similar right now myself. I'd call it an elongated bird and trout. Real good looking knife, great motivation for me to finish off mine.

Def a bird and trout/fillet style knife. Don't worry about the flaws just try to improve your skills while trying to make less mistakes and eventually you will be happy with your own work. I think it's a excellent knife, grinds look good and symmetrical (something I still fight with) handles have a nice even contour. O1 is always a good choice of tool steels. There's nothing to complain about and it's your first hollow grind knife. Keep up the good work.

I don't know what to "name" it but I'd call it a REALLY NICE knife. I love the design and I'm pretty sure it would do a pretty good job as a parer, small filet, steak, B&T, etc. Now go make another one and keep at it because at this pace I can't wait to see what your work looks like a year from now. Well done.

I think it look's great, nice and even, look's sharp too

That "just one more pass" will get ya all the time!!

I made something similar, but with no curve to the blade. I used to leave it on my desk at work and called it a "letter opener". It looks great! Better than my first one.

Thanks for all the kind words and opinions. I'm going to keep all of that in mind for the next one!

Make 7 more just like it and you will have a very elegant set of custom steak knives.
