My $200 knife quest defined. Yojimbo, Canis, or other wharncliff?

Well, thanks to you guys, my quest for a sub $200 folder is getting refined down.

After some thought that was helped along with your suggestions, I have refined my quest down to some more specific characteristics.

As I noted, and you all noticed, I have an affinity towards Spyderco, but I still remain open minded. Again, I prefer the hole, but for the right knife, I’ll adapt and overcome using a stud for opening.

I have also decided that I really do appreciate the wharncliff style blade. I’m leaning towards the Yojimbo or the slightly more expensive Canis. Does anyone have a preference, or even a suggestion for some other brand for this style of blade?

In a perfect world you have a killer knife shop in your area. try before you buy.

I would probably go all in and get the YoJumbo, because why not.

I have many Yojimbos and you saw my Canis post

I am a WHARNCLIFFE junkie and have found them to be the ideal utility/defensive piece

with that said I prefer the Yojimbo 2 over the Canis but the Canis imho would make a better all around utility knife do to the finer edge and tip of the Yojimbo’s

Both will work ya just gotta treat the Yojimbo a bit kinder

I have mostly gravitated to small 3 inch or so fixed blade wharnie worn horizontal on my belt for edc

I have been carrying a Yojimbo 1 as primary edc for over 10 years, I even have a spare in case something happens to the first one.

It really depends on what you want It for. It is a great knife if you want to poke and cut in SD situations, but that wicked point wouldn't work well as a daily chore knife.

I've owned the Yojimbo 2 twice, and it never fully clicked for me. Great design, and delightful in its intended Filipino grip.

But the Canis is my favorite 2020 release. It clicks in every way the Yo2 didn't, from its surprising thinness to the perfect light texture on the CF/G10 to the funky blade. Between those two, there's no contest for me.

On the budget end of the spectrum, the Off-Grid Knives Black Stallion -- name aside  -- is a lot of knife for $60. Comfortable, shares some of the meanness inherent in the designs of the Yo2 and Canis, excellent action; it's a solid knife all around.

It's not a traditional Wharnie, but the Hogue Deka is one of my favorite small Wharnie-like knives. The best description I heard is that where Benchmade set out to make the Bugout as light as possible, Hogue set out to make the Deka and by happy accident it wound up being nearly as light. One of my faves in shorts.

I don't get why it needs to be $200 really...

also, personally I also love wharns but dislike the really high chunky examples posted, (imho that artisan proponent and the yojimbo are ugly as a result)

this $40 fixed blade 'sea snake' uses artisans new pm stainless - looks 200% better imho

bestech has a nice looking 3.5" d2 blade (about $50)

and for only $90 you can get a special cf handle kershaw leek - (I use the plain version of this as my edc) - it's all around great

That Off Grid knife is a little too chunky for me at 61/2 ounces, but that Hogue has piqued my interest as well. It also has the benefit of also costing about $50 less than the Canis, which would be terrific as well. It looks to be a lot less delicate than the Yojimbo, which is also good. I do plan to mix this knife into my edc rotation, and I don’t have much room for delicate.

Another plus for me is the fact that it’s NOT made in China, which is just a personal preference of mine, while leaning hardest upon those made in USA blades that might be out there.

You guys keep making a decision harder, and that’s a good thing!

that carbon fibre kershaw leek is made in the USA ;) hard to beat at $90

or do you just like the chunky aesthetic?

The leek is a fine specimen, but it just doesn’t float my boat. I suppose one could say that I prefer the chunky aesthetic.

But I suppose one could also say that I prefer one that may hold up to a little bit of harder use. I’ve handled the Leek, and it just has a bit of a “gentleman’s knife” feel about it.

Which is fine, btw. It’s just that some may argue as to whether or not I would fit into the definition of a gentleman.

I love Wharncliffes. However, the Yojimbo was always a little too small for me. I can recommend the Smock, or the Launch 13. If you like large, the Yojumbo is phantastic.

Endura FTW

DSC_3364.jpg

Inexpensive, customizable, serrated/plain, easy carry.
For sure there are more glamorous Wharnies out there, but the Endura is a workhorse.
For two hunski get an Endura and a Delica/Rockhopper.

I own and love the Wharnie Deka, but it is a very small knife with an extremely thin blade and tip. Not necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of.

That Canis is cool. I'm not much of a Spyderco guy, but that is neat.

Spyderco also offers the RockJumper. Quite a bit more affordable, and Spydie does FFG VG-10 like nobody's business.

The Hogue Deka and Kershaw Launch 13 are in my "Get That" queue. They are too cool not to own.

And don't be scared off by the Gent's Folder tone of the Carbon Fiber Leek. It'll take it, and the CPM-154 really performs.

Treat yourself to the Canis.

This was one of the shortest posts in either of my threads, but you got me.

The Canis is on order. I’ll report back in a few days.

Oh, and I’ll be ordering that Kershaw Launch 13 before to much more time passes.

“Damn you guys.”, says my wallet. “Damn you all to hell.”:)
