My 2011 ABS Pro Bowler, Prospects & Suspects Update

This is a fun list. The only thing I would change is that I would bump Bump to the Young Turks category. He has made some astonishing knives and what not!!

Yes. Good!
How about creativity?
Or, about having a deep understanding of functional attributes of knife design? Or understanding the steel one is working with- knowing how the maker rigorously tests his knives?

I believe merit should be based on better knife design, performance qualities- if not more than technical bravura. (aestheitic) perfection, at least on equal footing. You have a popular group there, and much talent. But how do you quantify talent? You cant. You can say, these are the ones who impress you most! A list of names is more "exclusionary" than beneficial, even as a rough "guide" to
consumers it is misleading.
My personal opinion...
David

Hi David, I can see your point to a degree. As the problem with lists is that no matter how extensive and/or the thought that goes in deserving indivisuals will be left out.

But perhaps you are taking this thread too serious. As with most all forum threads, I'm sure Peter's intent was to stimulate productive, interesting and enjoyable public discussion. We all have our favorites and supporting reasons for such and thus our community and partisipants in it thrive.
Just my 2-cents

So the guy most convinced of the utter uselessness of the thread, is the guy who has the mosts posts in it. Odd, that.

It's a good list. Peter and I have very similar tastes and preferences when it comes to custom knives, so I'm not shocked by the fact that were I to craft my own list, it would be similar - though not identical.

Peter & all,
Sorry for the rant. I took this whole thread the wrong way.
apologies,
David

Geez, I guess I should take back all the things I said about you to Danbo this morning.
On second thought - they were basically true.

The Senator - a decent guy - LOL!

An interesting list. I own a fair number of knives from several makers on that list, so I certainly find a lot to agree with there.

I guess if everyone made a list, no two would be the same. From all the heated discussion above I don't know if I am supposed to offer my opinion on such a list, but at the risk of a bitter tonguelashing, I will say that the one place my list would be most different than this list is that I would include Jay Hendrickson in my "Old Guard." I was just looking at one of his damascus hunters that I own and I really love the way he brings the damascus pattern right to the very edge of the blade. And of course I love his silver wire inlay work. Plus he is a helluva nice guy. :)

But like I said, no two lists would be the same. But one good thing is that this list highlighted some folks whose knives I am not as familiar with, and so it will have me taking some good long looks at the knives of some of these makers the next time I get a chance. So thanks for that!
