Hello,

My Nyala finally came in the mail. Here are my thoughts and a few questions.

Pros: sharp, simple design, fits my hand well and has extra material to work with, came with leather sheath, overall happy with purchase.

Cons: after rinsing the knife off before doing some food prep, I noticed that the canvas micarta fibers are starting to lift up. Looks to be shedding. Lanyard is to long.

Why in the world is my canvas micarta shedding already? Please advise. Thanks folks.
Here are a few pictures.

Dang it, man!
Everything was going fine and then you come along and post pics like that and make me want a Nyala!
I don't need a Nyala, but now I want one!

Only buy one if your going to use it to hunt or do something outdoors. The Nyala is a user knife. Its not ugly by any means but its not all that sexy either. Just a good handy user type fixed blade. So far I am happy with it.

The canvas micarta scales will "swell" a bit when in contact with moisture....that's why it's said that the grip actually improves when it gets wet.

OK. Does swell mean that the canvas micarta fibers will lift up and look like little "nicks" in the handle scales?

I'm glad to hear that you're liking the knife😄

Mine have been wet, muddy, and bloody-even all at the same time, I've never seen the threads of the Micarta stand up anymore than they did when dry.
It's probably nothing and I'm sure they'll even out over time but if it's bothering you please call crk and ask them if that's "normal".

If you have the time update us with what they say.

Micarta often has fibers which raise above the surface. Nothing abnormal and nothing to worry about. Congrats on the Nyala!

My Nyala handles seemed waxy when I got them. I'm not sure if it is wax, or if it's something left over from when they polish them smooth at the factory, but there was some kind of coating that washed off the first time I washed the handles with hot soapy water and a toothbrush and some dishsoap.

OK. Thanks for information. :) I am happy with it. It just fits the hand good. Not to long and not to short. Just have to get this handle material figured out. Its just annoying is all. Maybe I just need to use it and abuse it and wear those little fibers off... HA!

Now that sounds like a great idea😃

After a little use I'm sure that you'll like it just the way it is.

I ended up buying 6 really nice fixed blades by another company and even though they're great blades I still go back to my Nyala-it's just right for almost everything, though I do love a large chopper every now and then 😄

The Nyala would be nice with a Full Flat Grind option.
I agree. Would make food processing a little better with a full flat grind. The nyala does complete food prep pretty well the way it is but seems to "wedge" foodjust a little which can cause onion to crack in pieces when trying to slice pieces for hamburger.

Oh yeah! I used it for food prep and cut some heavy cardboard today with the nyala. Did a pretty good job! The more I use it the more I like it. Its one of those knives that have to grow on you. :)

You mean it separate from handle?
The handle slabs that are connected to the handle for grip are made out of canvas micarta. My question is it normal that there be some wear of the canvas micarta material over time. Question as been answered but please give your input if you have some. Thanks!

Canvas micarta should wear very little, if at all.

Canvas can be cut, but it's pretty tough and you'd almost have to specifically try to damage it. Most wear that does occur can be 'erased' with some light polishing, but it's pretty unlikely that you'll ever need to do so. My canvas micarta handled S35VN Bravo 1 was my "go to" adventure blade for at least a year, after taking several falls, swims, and drops it has no visible wear to the handles. I believe that CRK uses a rougher finish so any wear will be even harder to notice.

OK. Thank you for the information. Do you use anything in particular to clean and lubricate the micarta? After getting wet, the micarta seems to lighten up and dry out on my Nyala. I have been using FP-10 and it seems to work very well.
