Found a general purpose woods combo I'm happy with, it consists of 3 bladed implements that all together total under $70.00 1) AG russell Woods walker W/kydex sheath...Gen pupose small fixed blade, handle whittling, game cleaning, food prep and general quick cutting $25 from Ag russell websight 2) victorinox field master all the nice standard sak features plus a saw scissors and a phillips head scredriver...$22 @ instawares.com 3 Ontario 12 inch camp machete fills the gap a s a chopper its short enough to store in a pack and the blade is thick enought to batton with if need be $18 at sales@fatiguesarmynavy.com
feed back is welcome and I'd also like to hear from other folks who have put together similar "budget" yet "functional" combos

My setup is a Mora 760 and a Wetterlings 13" hatchet. For around $40 it's hard to beat, and this combo will outperform just about anything else I have ever used.

I've got one of those combo's too. Mine is a Fiskar hatchet, the Mora 510, and a Leatherman Wave. The wave sort of busts this as a 'poor mans' trio, but it was a gift so I still count it. Before that, it was a pretty small SAK. If the weight of the LT bothers me, I'm going to go ahead and get the SAK OH Trekker.

I love cheap things that work well. I prefer them to the 'cadillacs' almost always.

Yup, got me one of those econo 3 blade edged tool systems as well.

All purchased on ebay............from memory, prices include shipping.

19" SA Wetterlings Hunter axe..............38.00
Eriksson 711......................................14.00
Victorinox Hunter LB SAK......................15.00

I see nothing to be embarrassed about. This is all good gear. Not buying the latest diamond dust edged Titanium berrylium bladed knife in a platinum sheath that was kissed gently by a super model, doesn't mean a damn thing when your tools work.;)

No embarrassment here. I find them to be superior to many of the edged tools I've owned over the years and many of those tools cost me a whole lot more than what I paid for these.

Exactly, I was probably thinking about myself, being new around here and slowly building up gear. I should have used myself as the example.:foot:

I wish I could boast the same of great deals, only canadian prices suck. :(
Thats true, but thats why they invented mailorder and the internet (actually I've been doing mailorders from the U.S since the mid 80's).
Maybe 10% (more like 5%) of my knife collection and other odds and ends were purchased in Canada, the rest purchased from our southern neighbors. If i can buy local i don't mind paying a little above the U.S price but theres no way i'm paying the 200% or more (above U.S) that some Canadian Retailers try to charge.

thats what ive done

Internet:
BK7 $100
Ka-bar black tanto $85
Gerber harsey hunter $70
Grohmann #4 $100
Sog hunter revolver (wait for it) $140

Loacal:
Wetterlings 19" $95
Buck Vanguard 192 $100:eek: :barf:

I love living up north

Companies that overcharge like that don't deserve your business or your money.
I honestly don't understand how these companies stay afloat, with the internet its so easy today to pricecheck things. Are these companies just greedy, dishonest and/or lazy? Or all of the above? Boggles the mind.
Unfortunately some things you just have to purchase locally... i mean who mailorders bread? lol.
A buddy of mine emailed me pics of food prices in the Yukon.
Example here a 12 pack of cans of Coke is about 6$...in the Yukon its 26$!!!!
Scary.

yeah, not that much for coke, here 8 bucks for 24 cans, how can ya go wrong. Some the prices I pay are for loacl compaines, Because they need to be supported. Its a shame when store like wallys come in and takes local buisness.

In italy, they average Coke-single can-is 12 dollars.

Back on topic i just ordered a weterrlings hunters hatchet, i plan on using that with my mora clipper and my old Vic Huntsman SAK for camping come spring. Total all three about 80 bucks U.S.
You really don't need to spend a fortune to get decent outdoor tools.
:)

Isn't that the truth Fonly !!! The U.S.members have it so good price wise. Any time I see a knife that I lust for, it will end up costing me twice what it is advertised in the U.S. My Becker Brute was $145.00 after shipping, within Saskatchewan. My Manix that is supposed to be in today (fingers crossed) was $192.00 with shipping from Vancouver. Huge U.S.market and stronger dollar and various other factors make our toys much more expensive. Although I must admit that the Ericksson Mora's that I found recently were only $8.95 each. That was a nice surprise and was a U.S. price match for once.

I know. The northern isolated fly in reserve that my wife and I were on: gallon of milk $14.00, a medium sized cabbage $9.00 etc. As an outsider you learn to hunt/fish the local food sources pretty quick, or pay through the nose for everything.
