So here's my 3rd knife.
This one is for my dad's christmas gift.
I found the Aus 8a- 6 in chefs blade on sale.
I Just did the handle work.
I even made the mosaic pin myself.
It's not perfect but I like it.
I can't remember what wood this is - maybe it's bocote or cocobolo.

My father in law loaned me his hf band saw. That really helped.
My hf sander gave me trouble - tracking way off and belts won't stay on.
Maybe a better sander is in my future.

So I used the hf sander for only about 10% of this one.
Needed it done today - so I went Old school file and sandpaper.
I've got about 6 to 7 hrs in this build.

A question - is mineral oil ok to use on wood handles.
Seems ok if it's for cutting boards.

If its bocote and it looks like it might be, you don't need a finish on the wood. Just sand to the grit you desire and buff. I use a couple of coats of car wax after that for some extra pop and protection and thats it. Bocote, Zircote, Cocobolo, some other Rosewoods and Ironwood can all be finished this way.

min oil is the only thing i like to use on kitchen knife handles since it cant go rancid. i sure woudl not put car wax on a knife i was coolking with
there is also a product called board butter and is bees wax blend and is also food safe but seals the wood more then plain min oil

True that; you know, I forgot that we were talking kitchen blade and was just in bocote finishing mode. Probably best to forego the wax.

I use a mix of 1 part boiled linseed oil to 2 parts regular shellac. It dries quickly, so you can put 3-5 coats on in a day, which is about what is needed.

It is food safe when dry, and it actually seals the wood.

You don't have to re-apply the shellac finish. It's permanent.

Mineral oil and wax need re-coating often.
