My 40 year dream to make knives

I've been wanting to make knives since I was a kid. I was only three years old when my father sold the George Schrade knife Co. I retired last December and started making knives in March. I think this is in my blood and God has given me a skill in my hand. The crown stag handle on the big Bowie is from a deer my father shot when he was 20 years old. I figure it to be around 70 years old. There is a 1/2" point protruding at the crown that allows it to stand up like that. Thanks for looking.

Wow. Incredible stuff! You are right on my friend. You have some God given skills!

Very nice -- I have a Geo Schrade wire jack with hawkbill blade I got from my grandfather -- nice to see you keeping the tradition alive!

William,

I had a very long reply to you, but mis-manuvered with the reply system here.

You have an admirable start. You appear to have interest in the hunting knife arena, as I do.

As long as you spend practice and gain experience on perfecting the plunge line and the guard-to-ricasso interface . .. . then you should do well. I cannot claim that I have perfected this. It is a continual learning and experience process.

Mr. Schrade, when I seen this thread title I thought well he sure has the name for knife making.. then when I opened the thread I was simply blown away..

You bet God has given you the talent to make knives and I for one am glad to see you put that talent to work !!!!

One of my very first knives was an old timer, not sure if its one your dad designed but I loved the shape.. Always had a fondness for Schrades..

Glad to see you here and really look forward to many more posts to come...

take care,
Rob

Just gorgeous knives. I'm beyond impressed that those are your first blades! Can't wait to see more! Also, what a marvelous story, thank you for sharing.

Very nice work.
George and your dad are some of my heroes!

I agree gorgeous knives. As mentioned earlier the plunge to ricasso lines I would adjust if it was me... The two guardless drop point blades are an example, if you can blend them that wod look great. But don't get me wrong, those are great blades! Congrats, welcome to blowing your retirement.

Thanks for all your compliments and I appreciate your advice. I was looking for some constructive criticism. You can't find that in books or CDs.
I'm thinking of a break out performance at next years Blade show. Jump in with the big fish.

Very cool!

One of my very first knives as a kid, after my Camp King four blade and my Buck 110, was an Old Timer.

Those blades look really nice! Best of luck with your work and thanks for sharing. I consider Schrade to be one of the great classic knife making families. Thanks for posting!

That's cool man. Welcome to the forum.

As I am just starting on my first knives (and loving it) this is hugely impressive and a great story to boot. I remember the first thing I ever won was at a cub scout raffle about 35 years ago. It was an Old Timer knife that I have and cherrish to this day.

And BTW you are only about 25 miles from me - hint hint

Well that is just a great story. Looking forward to many great knives coming from you. Keep posting them up, and throw in for a knife maker account so you can sell some on here.

The first fixed blade i ever had given to me was a Schrade. It was a 150T Deerslayer model. Not sure if your father designed that one or not but IMO it is one of the best knives for skinning deer and moose. I got mine from my father and he had skinned countless deer with it before i ever got it. The blood and other things it encountered while skinning has given the blade the most incredible gold/blue/purple patina. Great knives and a great history in the knife world.
