My 5 day hike

From what i have seen from Bark River and all my personal experience with A-2 ,, its 100% not the Normal Performance,, .... its messed up you got called a troll... cause your knife has 5 choils

Great photos and captions... looks like a great time to clear your head despite the ups and downs.
I'm sure Bark River will replace that knife for you. They have to expect that many of their customers reprofile their blades and that sharpening is a given. What good is a knife if it's toast after a good sharpening? Please let us know what the outcome is.

what the heck is "unsupported chopping" ?

I think it's when you don't hold the wood being chopped firmly (it isn't supported) and when you chop it moves from and with the chops and this can create sideways and twisting forces to the edge causing a thin edge to deform and chip.

just a guess... regardless that edge damage looks nasty.

Ankar, thanks for sharing!

Excellently written with great pics.

What backpack did you use and what was the total loadout weight?

I was there on saturday that is one helluva hike.

Great pics!!!!

Too bad about the Gunny. I got one the scales were uneven on and sent it back and the new one is great.

I need to go try mine out on something tough just to make sure it doesn't have the problems yours had.

Like somebody said they farm out their heat treating of blades so it's possible that somebody got yours too hot during grinding.

I'm pretty sure most of the time they just send you a new knife so I wouldn't worry about the thicker edge thing.

The Gunny I have is has a way lower angle than any of my scandis so I wouldn't beat the hell out of it or anything but it should have survived the use you said you did with it.

Oh 1 thing I learned, ponchos really dont keep you dry, they just keep you less wet..

After experiences hiking using numerous types of raingear I have found that if you are hiking and sweating the condensation inside will get you as wet or wetter than if you wore nothing.

If you don't sweat you are OK usually but last few years I have just been keeping a dry set of clothes to wear when I get to camp.

Man it sound like you had a fantasic trip there.. What makes the trip more unforgetable is when unplaned things happen.. I bet you wont forget it ever lol... The pics are awsome and man i would have loved to be right there under the tarp with the rain around... oh and a good book .... Haven couldnt be better..

Great pics, and one hell of an adventure!!! Um to Bark, or not to Bark???

Yeah, trips aren't always easy or fun. At least when you're solo, you don't have to listen to the other guy bitching.

Thanks for sharing your experiences during the trip

At least it looks like the fish were cooperative :D.

Kind regards
Mick

Bushman, "unsuported chopping" was described to me as

"Snapping the knife without a firm grip can do this.

Snap chops without a firm grip causes quick side stress on the edge and can cause the very break outs your knife seems to have."

Mr. Stewart also says

"I can duplicate it for you on almost any knife of almost any geometry that is good cutting geometry. or any steel."

I really dont get it though, using some bigger choppers, the NMFBM for instance which I put a very thin convexed edge on, sometimes when the notch i'm chopping gets bigger and you aim for the edge the blade skips horizontally down into the notch. Now thats with a really heavy knife, swinging it very hard, with very clear lateral stress on the edge and that never provided so much as a dent or roll. In my estimation it shouldn't be physically possible to cause that kind of damage using a piece of green wood of that size on any proper knife.

I'm sure Mr. Stewart will resolve this issue in a satisfactory way though, he really seems to care about customer service.

Hey Horton, thats exactly what I though, someone got a little careless finishing that edge. 5 choils, lol I'm gonna use that.

Einsteinjon, I dont know where people get off, or how anyone can be so zealous about a product. Frankly that kind of behavior isnt doing anyone any favors, least of all BRKT, i have had no interest in revisiting that subforum since then.
I'll let them know how I'd like to proceed, they said they'd contact me when it arrives.

Porcupine, I didn't even sharpen it aside from a few passes on the strop, that was the factory edge.

PatriotDan, my pack was one of these http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524441776565&FOLDER<>folder_id=2534374302699867&bmUID=1249760952847
I also had a new Maxpedition Jumbopack, which in the future I wont take. Ended up just stuffing it in my backpack anyway.

My weight was 45lb. Pretty reasonable, but next time if I'm serious about getting from one end of the trail to the other I'll try and shave some more weight off. Ditch the fishing gear :(, binoculars, probably just sleep on the ground with a pad & bag with a smaller tarp instead of the hammock/wool blanket, less food, no liquor, ect. At time the 45lb felt pretty heavy, mainly when I was soaking wet and already exhausted.

One Stabb, that looks like a nice day hike. I never really go down to westhawk lake, I grew up on Caddy lake so thats always where I like to start. I'm going to have to check out that trail though. Do you live in Winnipeg?

Hollowdweller, glad you were looked after. I'd recommend every blade be thoroughly tested close to home before being taken out, you just never know... What do you mean by farm out their heat treating? I thought they did that in house.
What angle do you suppose your gunny was at? I cant imagine having an edge angle much lower than a scandi.

Glad everyone enjoyed the tale. Problems are good, ain't nothing like a bit of hardship and suffering to keep you honest with yourself. I bet a near death experience would be really enlightening! :p

Mr. Stewart also says

"I can duplicate it for you on almost any knife of almost any geometry that is good cutting geometry. or any steel."

I love barkies but that sounds like BS to me.:thumbdn:

Great work with the silky saw, btw, quite a feat!:)

Yup live in the peg, You are one luck man to have grown up in that area what a backyard to have.

i've done the same thing with my fox river plenty of times with no problems. i dont see why the gunny should have chipped like that.
