Awhile back when I started this grinder a few people on here were interested in a WIP. Didn't get enough pics for that but I put together this little video. The grinder is an obstacle for a lot of people starting out because it's expensive. This is how I used what I had to do what I could. Maybe some new guys will get some ideas.

As a disclaimer I'm not a YouTuber and I'm sure the commentary and lighting and all suck. I gave er my best Cap'n. It's not the prettiest machine, and I doubt it works as good as a burr king or a kmg, but I could have it and it's a damn site better than a file. Thanks for looking.

Nice work!

That really looks like it will serve you well.

The long board wheels are a good option. People who have no clue about skateboard wheel technology will say not to use them and you guys are showing how wrong they are.

I was told not to use them but I seen them working elsewhere. They're designed to carry a 200 lb gorilla downhill at ridiculous speeds. That's 50 lbs per wheel. So I honestly didn't see how they would have a problem with 35 lbs of belt tension. After all this time they still spin freely. If I need to replace the bearings, $12 for a full set of abec 9s. I figured for $20 it was worth testing, I wouldn't be out much. If they failed I would of bought the aluminum wheels.

Thanks for that camoninja. I haven't attempted to decipher the meanings of all the symbols above the text box on mobile.

way to go Ryan, very resourceful, and this just shows something can be done if you have the drive to do it. i really like the incline tension system.

Way to go, Ryan !!! Super !!!!
Frank

Thank you! Not sure which was harder, making the grinder or making knives. Second iteration of the grinder worked, took about 8 knives before I had something presentable. And then I spent to much time ogling pictures of knives like yours and decided to start making folders. A whole different can of worms.

Hi Ryan, that is really good design. I using skate wheel for my build too. Can you tell me which kind of skate wheel are you using? Is that the hard one or soft one? I am having the problem to find the hard longboard wheel.

Pretty neat build. I really like the air filter :)

The longboard wheel will work OK, but I would look at replacing the drive wheel as soon as you can. A wooden wheel can easily explode, especially if it gets hot in a long grinding session.

Thanks Stacy. That filter does look cool up there. At one point I was considering velocity stacks lol. And yeah I'm planning to replace that drive wheel. I didn't think it would last this long.

Hall effect sensor. Thank you. That was driving me nuts.

I used these https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I...g+boy+76mm&dpPl=1&dpID=41BncvHrJ-L&ref=plSrch
The durometer rating was 78a. They're not super hard but not all that soft either. They've been on there since I made it and I haven't noticed wear. The backside of the belt is a lot smoother than asphalt.

Cool Build! Congrats! :)

Not sure why you have two air filters on it? I can see one for intake, I think you said in the video the other is for exhaust?

I love it! Especially how you reacted when people told you it wouldn't work. Half my stuff comes from people telling me what won't work.

Thank you! Air needs a place to come in and to leave. It sucks air through the square vertical filter, and it exits through the filter on top. It's set up in the box so that the filters are isolated from each other with a divider.

Yeah I don't know how many times I about scrapped the project because people said it wouldn't work. Some of them were owners of grinder companies. I have a whole bunch of steel plates to make a new one. Scrap from a grain bin jack manufacturer. Seen them all setting out front and asked if I could buy them as scrap and he gave them to me. About 25 plates that are 8" x 20" x 1/2". I have a design similar to the wilmont grinder with solid square stock for tooling arms in mind. But I just can't justify making it when mine still works. Secretly, I think I hope it bites the dust just so I can build another. It was a fun project and I learned a lot. But it keeps on choochin'.
