All of the stuff was given to me, or scrounged up in the shop.

Not sure what type of knife to call it, it has a tanto edge (I think that's what you call it)

An old planar blade was given to me, being it was already hardened, and unknown steel type, I did as little as possible as far as grinding.

I had to use the plasma cutter to put holes in it for the 2 pins in the handle. It laughed at my drill bit when I attempted to drill the holes.

I put an angled point on it, and matched the angle on the original edge. I also had to clean up the original edge a lot, it was worn down and abused by whatever machine it came from.

I found the brass for the bolster, some wood (I think it's oak) and an old shoe (for the leather) in my papaw's shop. He passed away 2 years ago, but grandmaw let's me pilfer for stuff whenever I want.

I guess all I paid for was the epoxy, and wood glue. I just started piecing it together, never drew anything out, or measured, just thought up the idea in my mind, and started.

here is another old blade like the one I started with next to it.

I know the pins don't match the bolster, but I don't have any brass rod, so no choice there.

I'm going to give it to my oldest friend for Christmas, he likes tanto style knives, and we have been friends for 30 years now.

The advice I'm seeking is, what are your thoughts on an inscription burned into the scabbard?

I was thinking something like "To my oldest friend"
or "30 years friends" Maybe his name on the other side?

How about something a little more "man friendly" like maybe "to 30 years of beers and cheers"

I have a soft spot for blades made out of and incorporating found items of personal significance. This is a good one. Nicely done.

As for an inscription... I really like the clean look of it as is, and you seem to have a talent for the woodwork. How about a box with an inscription and that nice clean blade and scabbard inside?

Don't forget to tape a penny to the gift and have him 'pay' you that penny back for the blade... Its supposedly bad luck to 'give' a blade as a gift... lol.

That's a nice looking blade. How about for an inscription:

I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.

Or

The best mirror is an old friend.

Or

Words are easy, like the wind; Faithful friends are hard to find.

Awesome work. Pins are fine. They don't match the bolster? So what? They match the big sharp pointed metal thingy in the front. Looks good that way, and the bolster adds a nice little contrast in between. Wouldn't change a thing. Seriously.
