I know a lot of folks love certain companies and hate others. Specifically, I know a lot of folks hate Cold Steel and Lynn Thompson. We're all entitle dto our own opinions. Here's mine;

I went to The Crossroads of the West Gun and Knife Show in Phoenix today. I spent a few hours browsing around the Cold Steel tables and bought two of their knives. I met Lynn thompson and a few of his employees.

They were all very friendly and helpful. Say what you want about Lynn, but he was A-OK as far as I'm concerned. He wasn't egotistical, rude or arrogant. He answered questions and took the time to talk to everyone.

Bash him and his knives all you want, but I don't see what all the hate is about. He makes great knives and a lot of folks buy a lot of his knives. I like other brands, but see no reason to trash another company just because you don't personally buy their products.

I've read a lot of trash talking on the internet about Lynn Thompson and Cold Steel. I just wonder how many of those keyboard commandos would actually have the balls to say the same things to Lynn's face in person?

If you can't say it to a man's face, don't say it at all.

Good post.

I have a few CS knives and they all have performed just as I have wanted. I have nothing but good things to say about them thus far. Even the cheapo Fin Bear I has held up to daily kitchen duty for two years and has seen the inside of the dishwasher more than a few times.

yep i have several cold steels cheap to the high natchez, though there are harder steels to his they get SHARP...........

Isn't assuming that people will not say something "to his face" even more ridiculous than assuming that NOBODY on the internet is tough enough to stand up to Lynn Thompson?

If everybody that thought Cold Steel's videos were dumb and that their products are marketed to the stupid, young, and uninformed wanted to tell Lynn Thompson how they felt "to his face"...he would have a full time job listening to people calling him names.

In the same fashion that people do not have to read the positive reviews of the products, you do not have to read the negative opinions of Lynn or the way he carries himself or his company.

They have their fanboys and their haters, just like any other company.

I love his knives, I just want to tell him shooting animals for 'sport' does not make him any more of a man, just less of one.

I'm not a fan of his sales strategy, but, to each his own.
Cold Steel does bring some great knives to the market and I happily own many of them. CS also deserves credit for bringing items to the market not readily available otherwise. Like working spears, for example. To me, that is way cool. Where else you gonna get a working Boar Spear or a Zulu Assegi?

Now, story time. Just recently I rediscovered an old Hudson Bay butcher knife with a 7" Carbon V blade (1/8" thick), I'd put away and subsequently forgotten about. I had ground the hump on the back down to make it a straight back knife. Oddly enough, I'd been considering making a Leuku lately and this knife is THE perfect candidate for this particular project. I love it when a plan comes together. :)

I would like to tell Lynn Thomson, TO HIS FACE ...

"can I get in on those knife demo movies? I have noticed you have lots of extra meat, but none of the videos end in a BBQ ??? I will bring the grill!

(I seriously would ask him that -meat is expensive)

Oh, and the bowie machete is awesome.

i love cold steel knives but there was just one thing i didn't like when i received the most recent catalog. it had a picture of him holding up a leopard... now in my book that is one of those creatures that shouldn't be killed. There aren't many of them to begin with and for him to hunt one just is not ok in my book. Its a beautiful creature and did not deserve to be killed.

You do know your just food in the eye's of your average leopard, right?
What if that leopard had taken a liking to the local villagers? I'm sure the people living near that leopard's hunting ground appreciated Lynn relieving them of a life or death burden.
Lynn's a hunter. And, his hunt, in all likelihood, helped their economy to boot. He's entitled to do his thing wherever the laws allow as long as he obeys them and pays all applicable fees and such. As long as he's not breaking any laws, it's a case of no harm, no foul. Well, except to one particular leopard, of course.;)

just sayin'...

While all leopard subspecies are either endangered or threatened. The leopard LT shot is not. In fact they are considered the shrewdest of the big cats and often enter villages to prey on livestock and dogs. They can become man-eaters and since they always operate under the cover of darkness they are extremely difficult to counter. Hunting a trophy that is not endangered is legal and steep fees are paid. These fees ensure an animal species being looked at as a source of income, to protect (instead of eliminated) to many impoverished third world countries. This ultimately winds up doing a lot more good than harm as to how an animal such as a leopard is viewed.

Good to see that. I'm ambivalent about CS personally, but it's always nice to see that a knife company president is a nice guy.

...Now if we could just get him to post on here, like Mr. Glesser, that would be first class.

Oh, and I don't agree with sport hunting either, but that's just MHO

Here is my take on cold steel knives, not on Lynn, I have never met the man or heard anything but internet talk so I can't comment on him.
Cold Steel has some very nice knives, at a pretty decent value but they also have some very ugly and mall ninja type designs.
Nice knives from Cold Steel in my opinion are the Trail Master, Recon Scout, the majority of their machetes (once you put an edge on them), the majority of their tomahawks, and most of the voyager series.
They also have some high priced not so practical knives like the Talwar, Caledonian Edge, Spectre, and Black Talon.
I'm very sad to see Cold Steel raise the price on the Trail Master, and Recon Scout.
I would be quite surprised if the sales on those models haven't dropped quit a bit since the steel change and price drop.

Seems though on the CS board the opinion doesnt sway that way back. Seems they really like to bash people that dont review his pieces as positive are called and I quote Ignorant, and dishonest about knives. When they are pressed about it they actually say that the person in the videos did it wrong and should not replicate Lynns tests.

Funny how now they preach how he is great and makes great stuff. Number 1 he makes nothing. His stuff is made for him. 2 his stuff is good but way overpriced for some tools. 3 I own and choose CS stuff very carefully. Why spend 250 on some of his folders when I can go ZT and get way better for cheaper cash.

I do own several CS products and love the ones I have. My SRK has served me now over 10 years along with a Voyager 4 incher that went everywhere for 6 years, but other than those I really stay away from the Coolaid and look at other companies that will make better for less.

I don't care for some of the CS designs but I have never got a bad knife from them ( I have 6+) My master hunter in carbon V is one of my favorites and it's a second.
