This is my verision of a "Survival" rifle. This term means many different things to many different people, but here are some of my reasons for sharing this rifle w/ you all.
This is a 1946, Soviet Union made M44 Mosin Nagant carbine rifle. It fires 7.62x54R ammo, basically the Russian verision of <something similar> to the .308Win (7.62x51 NATO) round.
These rifles have been deemed by the government as having historical value, and as such, are listed as "Curio & Relic's" (C&R). Many, many types of military surplus (MILSURP) weapons fall into this catagory. I purchased this M44 because it was essentially new, other then packing and shipping scuffs, comsoline, etc. It was $99 after taxes, fee's, etc. Ammo is readily available, extermely cheap, current production ammo is available and the military surplus ammo is bulk packed. As it is a C&R rifle, the gov technically views it as a collector item, meaning there <could> be some leeway in the event of some kind of weird vast government take over, and weapons seziure. It is milsurp, it was made for meek, small statured Soviet Soldiers. But it was made tough, it is handy, accurate, and powerful. It requires no special take down tools. And its purpose and design should be self-explanatory. When I took it to the range, people were more curious about it, and viewed as a "neat, old timey gun" which is good IMO for low profile. I also feel this rifle fufills many niche roles. In a SHTF scenerio I could use the rifle and ammo as a barter item, or donate it to a neighbor/friend for use, or I could bury it and forget about it.
Anyways here are some pictures since I sporterized it. I bought a ATI synthetic stock which is pretty much the only one available. I like it, and still have the orginal, untouched wood stock. The front end warped to the right, so I had to bob it to remove that, so that is less a fashion statement and more nessecity. I got the sling free from a friend. Overall price w/ rifle, new stock, spray paint and charger clips is roughly $160. Painted the barreled action flat black, and misted the stock to achieve a Sage green color. As an M44 I had to cut-off the fixed spike bayonet, and I removed the top of the front sight hood.

Here is some plinking on a colemens propane tank at roughly 50 yards. Touching holes up top, and then see how one skidded before peneterating.

Two more touching holes -

3 exit holes-

off-topic, Kneeling snap shot w/ shotgun and 1oz rifled slug @ 25 yards -

ouch!
