This is my verision of a "Survival" rifle. This term means many different things to many different people, but here are some of my reasons for sharing this rifle w/ you all.

This is a 1946, Soviet Union made M44 Mosin Nagant carbine rifle. It fires 7.62x54R ammo, basically the Russian verision of <something similar> to the .308Win (7.62x51 NATO) round.

These rifles have been deemed by the government as having historical value, and as such, are listed as "Curio & Relic's" (C&R). Many, many types of military surplus (MILSURP) weapons fall into this catagory. I purchased this M44 because it was essentially new, other then packing and shipping scuffs, comsoline, etc. It was $99 after taxes, fee's, etc. Ammo is readily available, extermely cheap, current production ammo is available and the military surplus ammo is bulk packed. As it is a C&R rifle, the gov technically views it as a collector item, meaning there <could> be some leeway in the event of some kind of weird vast government take over, and weapons seziure. It is milsurp, it was made for meek, small statured Soviet Soldiers. But it was made tough, it is handy, accurate, and powerful. It requires no special take down tools. And its purpose and design should be self-explanatory. When I took it to the range, people were more curious about it, and viewed as a "neat, old timey gun" which is good IMO for low profile. I also feel this rifle fufills many niche roles. In a SHTF scenerio I could use the rifle and ammo as a barter item, or donate it to a neighbor/friend for use, or I could bury it and forget about it.

Anyways here are some pictures since I sporterized it. I bought a ATI synthetic stock which is pretty much the only one available. I like it, and still have the orginal, untouched wood stock. The front end warped to the right, so I had to bob it to remove that, so that is less a fashion statement and more nessecity. I got the sling free from a friend. Overall price w/ rifle, new stock, spray paint and charger clips is roughly $160. Painted the barreled action flat black, and misted the stock to achieve a Sage green color. As an M44 I had to cut-off the fixed spike bayonet, and I removed the top of the front sight hood.

Here is some plinking on a colemens propane tank at roughly 50 yards. Touching holes up top, and then see how one skidded before peneterating.

Two more touching holes -

3 exit holes-

off-topic, Kneeling snap shot w/ shotgun and 1oz rifled slug @ 25 yards -

ouch!

Here's is the remenants of a 180 grain JSP on a 1 gallon water jug @ 100 yards-

Notice the Winchester stamp inside the jacket?

Pretty evening-

And when prior owners leave you w/ a front yard full of rusty nails... Start a collection! I know totally random

i have a Finnish nagant(m39?) made by sako. love it. somebody chopped the stock before i got it, but it's still a fun shooter. easily the best 80 bucks i've ever spent at midnight in the wal mart parking lot...

I have wanted one of those for a while now but just cannot find where to buy one.

Being a C&R w/ the right licensing, etc, you could just buy these online and have them sent to your house. FYI

Definately a easy and fun gun to tinker with. Rough around the edges, but I had fun tweeking it. Plus w/ some solvent, I could have it orginal back in no time.

I read that the rearsenaled Fins are the best quality Mosin Nagants available. Love the last sentence lol.

Not a bad deal! I didn't know you could mod it with a synth stock. I might have to grab one. The ATI stock is a snug fit? It doesn't look flush on some parts.

The ATI stock is its own animal I guess lol. They come slightly tight, so as to allow material removal for a better fit. Plus flash marks from its production. Mine had a wrapped front end, so I had to fix that because it was tweeking the barreled action. Not the prettiest stock. But it is solidly built, snug fitting and I'd have no hesitations throwing it over a cliff, and retrieving it and shooting it.

So you had to remove material from stock to get it to fit? What did you use to remove it?

i would like to find another Finnish stock for it, the ball on the pistol grip is really comfy. somebody painted all the metal parts gold, and cut the first 8-10 inches off the front of it. i've cleaned up the metal, and gotten rid of the cosmoline, but that chopped front really bugs me...

you should see some of the stuff i've gotten (and sold:eek:)in the lowe's parking lot.

There is a shadow in that last picture w/ the sickle & hammer and year stamp. That isn't a gap, but I did some real minor inletting around the recoil lug and barrel channel, none for the magazine. But I did have to use a hacksaw to remove roughly 6-7" of the fore end. I was unlucky to get one slightly warped, so I had to adapt :D. I used a wood chisel, dull file :( and some sand paper. Had it not been warped, it probably would have dropped right in no modification. It looks pretty good in person, and I'm obviously not too embrassed to share w/ other people :D. Plus ATI offer lifetime warranty (granted I didn't F that up). And integeral swivel studs.

LOL ^

I'm sure the Finnish stocks are more expensive to buy as well.

i had an M44 with the ati stock. the stock was fine, but the gun had been tapped for a scope mount, and a red dot added. the rear leaf was removed... they stopped before cutting the bolt handle off. i sold it to a buddy for 60 dollars.

7.62R is nothing like 7.62 nato, they aren't comparable. Do your research before buying a Mosin, and look it over well. You want stamped matching serial numbers, not electro-penciled, and find one with a solid rifled barrel that hasn't been counterbored. Also, removing the bayonet on the M44 has been known to screw with the harmonics of the barrel and thus shift the point of impact. That said, a good factory M44 can be a tackdriver and it definately fills the role of survival rifle perfectly.

Good information. You forgot to add that I didn't mention some ammo for this style of rifle is corrosive and potentially harmful to the barrel, etc, etc, etc. Hopefully you all here research a firearm before buying one/operating one. Like I said mine had been barely used before going into storage. Also there isn't a drastic difference between .308win and a .54R to come across as a little bitch, besides being rimmed and obviously not interchangable. I won't go tit for tat about their differences and similarities. Just trying to relate their (Soviet Union round) to something Western. I also managed to adjust my sights to achieve accuracy to my satisifaction ;).

I'm not clear on what you mean by wrapped. Warped? I'd love to emulate your mod here but I don't want to screw it up. I have no experience with refinishing firearms or doing anything but shooting them and breaking them down. Here in Cali, Big 5 sells the Nagant for closer to $200 I think. I'd like to find one cheaper and copy your mods here. Nice work.
