My _____ addiction

What’s up BF, fairly new here, don’t post much but looking for some input on my ____ addiction. This is my addiction to a certain production company who shall not be named because I feel it would take away from the point I’m trying to get across. I have always had an appreciation of knives but only started getting “higher end” (more than $100) knives about a year and a half ago when I purchased four completely different knives all made by the same company. This was before I knew anything about steel, action, blade centering etc, and I just bought them because I really liked them. Since then, I have purchased about 20 more “high end” knives, but about 75% of them are from that same company, and any plans for new purchases are from them as well. I guess what I’m trying to say in this rant is that while I really enjoy all of my purchases, I feel that I’m missing out by only committing to one company. I would not consider myself a fanboy or have anything against other companies and custom knife makers; but i know what I like and am comfortable with, and when I’m spending at least $100 on a knife comfort is something I’d like to have. Sorry if this post doesn’t have a point, just looking for some banter and maybe recommendations for any type (steel, grip, opening mechanism) of knife that would peak any knife enthusiast’s interest.

I was the exact same way as you when I first got into collection. I bought a Benchmade or 2 and then found Spyderco. It was game on from there. My next 20+ knives were Spydercos and I felt a bit like you...like I might be missing out on something. Since then, I've expanded my collection greatly. I have knives from Benchmade, Spyderco, Hogue, Kershaw, Chris Reeve, Hinderer, ZT, and a few more. You should definitely check out other brands to see if there's something you might like better. Take what you've learned about your preferences from buying the brand that you have and apply it to other brands. I'm sure you can find other knives from different companies that you like just as much...if not more.

Welcome! Nobody on here can tell you what you should or shouldn't like. There are guys in this community that only collect Pm2s, Weirdos... ;) What do you find interesting and unique about this company? Also if you feel that you are missing out by only buying one company, make the next purchase something really different and see if you like it. I always try to make sure that I'm purchasing something with a specific role in mind. I personally find it really interesting to see everybody's subjective taste in cutlery changes. It'd be cool if you'd show us a picture of your collection. Here is mine.

I had the same mindset (and still do) as to limit myself to as few companies as I can, more out of budgetary reasons because I can't buy everything I like, so I go with companies I have got good experience with. Maybe I miss out on something cool, but I know one of those couple of companies that I know and like will have something down the line. A good example would be Bestech, they seem to produce some good quality blades for the money and have some interesting designs but do I need another Ti Framelock Flipper? Not really no, I can buy another CKF or a Reate. Admittedly there is a price difference, but I already have Reate's and CKF's, so to me it makes more sense.

Thanks for the input guys. There really are so many beautiful knives out there. Obviously it all comes down to preference, but diversity is always nice. I would consider myself a knife collector at this point, but I guess I really can’t say that I’m a true knife collector until I get my hands on some real essentials like Chris Reeve, hinderer, shirogorov (if I happen to find $700 lying around), but I do look forward to the journey and debt ;)

The correct answer to fill in the blank is "Bacon" btw.

I went thru the routine most folks go thru. Buy knives from most of the major makers to try different blade steels, blade shapes, handle materials, and lock types.

I would suggest branching out and trying other brands but in the end if one Co. makes you happy, so be it.

If someone put a gun to my head and said "Pick one knife Co for the rest of your life", I'd pick Spyderco.

Gazz, you are absolutely right about my bacon addiction. Also, Spyderco is one of the only brands I don’t own. Not to sound like a noob, but they mostly seem alike. I have a friend who owns one and I can see that they’re obviously crafted beautifully, but what model would you recommend starting with? I definitely have been looking to check one out but being that I see them all as one knife I’ve been hesitant to commit to one. I am an electrician and looking for a folder I can abuse with random tasks that can withstand dust. Is that an oxymoron?

Please don’t say that bob...saying that they’re good investments is the only justification I can give myself

It's a fun addiction and if you think about it it's not as expensive as womens fashion addiction.

Just imagine a Gucci or Prada handbag costs $3,000 to $5,000 for her, your whole knife collection will be less than one descent handbag :) Or Christian Louboutin shoes $1,000 - $1,500.

Now tell me how bad is our addiction?

P.S. I paid over $2,000 for my knives and (other than my fav Bench Barrage 581 which I carry and abuse) I keep them nice and neat. If I were to sell these in future and buy other knives I could easily do it. Therefore I am not losing any money and can trade or exchange these knives...

Those used bags and high end shoes, minute you step out of the shop 30% value loss :)

This is a f**king awesome addiction!

Proudly Addicted and not going to rehab anytime soon :)

The Manix 2 in G10 might be favorite. If you have really big hands, there is an XL version.
The Paramilitary family (2 or 3 sizes, not sure if the 1st is discontinued) is another popular choice.

Do you carry expensive knives to work? I might be more inclined to use a solid but less expensive knife. Is a fixed blade knife an option?
