My Alan Davis Folder experience

Nice write up! That's pretty much in line with all of his wonderful slip joints that he produces as well!

What is awesome is that you a putting the knife to use! It's such a hard choice to make when you have a working piece of art in front of you!

Thanks! I would love to acquire more of hos work in the future. I am really enjoying carrying and using this blade as it was intended. So far it has performed flawlessly.

Congrats! That looks like the perfect EDC knife.:cool:

Thank! It totally is.

Congratulations on winning the knife! That was very generous of Alex to giveaway such a nice blade. It looks like the right person got it! While the knife is beautiful, it looks like it was meant to be used. I'm not sure if I've seen Alan Davis's work before, but that is impressive.

One question though, is the surface of the blade pitted or is that some sort of patina??
I've never stropped on cardboard before, I'll have to look into that.

I don't want to get too off topic, but I had to look up what a 'pierogi' was. I would like to try some those if I can find someone that serves them. You might want to try some Chinese dumplings. The pork/leek stuffed ones are good and they have a lot of other kinds too.

Just a beautiful knife. Congrats to you, man. It looks like you're definitely enjoying this piece.

Thanks! It was a very kind and generous thing for Alex to do! It definitely was built to be used and I have been getting alot of good use out of it so far. It fits my hand just right and there are no noticeable hot spots while in use.

The surface does have a rough pitted texture to it. But not so much that it hinders performance. This thing slices and slices. It slices just like the Spyderco Gayle Bradley did with that hollow grind. Like a razor through cardboard.

Pierogis are so good! They are similar to a ravioli but with a thicker dough/noodle on the exterior. Depending on where you are located you might be able to find them in an Ethnic type store that has foods from a variety of nationalities.

I looove Chinese dumplings. So does my wife. Sadly there are really no good places to get good Chinese food in the Midwest Omaha/Council bluffs metro.

It's a stunning knife. Love everything about it. Congrats.

Thanks! Me too!

Wow. Congratulations. Very classy!
I must say i am guilty of a couple deadly sins right now!

Thanks! Haha

Thank you! I truly am enjoying this blade and every time I get to use it.

I have been doing quite a bit of food prep with this knife since it arrived. Initially it would look to be a so so cutter with the finish that the blade has. That is not the case with this one. The blade had a slight texture to it while still remaining smooth. (Make Sense) It slices extremely well and I have yet to encounter anything that it had troubles with.

Tonight we made some tacos with ground turkey and uncooked tortillas. I was digging around through the fridge to find some vegetables to cut up and put on mine. Initially I found half of a green pepper, and about a quarter of an onion. I started to reach for the kitchen knives, then came to my senses and grabbed the Alan Davis.

Here is a pic of the pepper and onion.

Then I found a lone Roma tomato at the bottom of the crisper that looked like it wanted in my tummy. Typically a softer, older tomato is a little tricky to slice efficiently without a blade that is sharp and has a nice grind for doing so. So this was going to be something I was interested in seeing how easily it performed the task.

Flawlessly.

Again, Overall loving this blade and how capable it is. I have yet to encounter a situation where I thought twice about its ability to perform the task to my standards. This grind has proven itself to be just about perfect for my EDC needs. From work duty to kitchen prep it does it all. Only thing I have yet to do is some wood working. Making walking sticks for my kiddos, cutting general branches just for the heck of it or pry anything with it (not sure if I want to risk it). Although on the last one. I do think that it could handle it. The blade it very beefy and hefty. It makes my Ritter grip blade look tiny and frail.

Well guys, thanks for checking in on the thread. I think I will change the title to an experience/ongoing review so I can continue to update my findings with this wonderful blade.

I can walk you through the Chinese dumpling making process if you want! I just made wontons myself and posted it up in the food section on bf.

Oh man definitely! I am going to check that out! My wife would love to make those!

Cut up some snacks for my boys today. I am constantly amazed by the cutting ability of this knife. It slices so well and easy. Makes me love using it that much more.

I have been carrying my SNG for the last couple weeks, but missed my Davis. This knife is so comfortable to hold and use. And shoots out like an auto. It's so smooth with this bearing setup.

One thing about it that I would like, is if the scales had a little more grip to them. It sustained it's first drop on the floor. Scraped the corner of the CF a little. I was sick about it at first, but quickly realized that it is still a tool that I use.

More good prep going on here today. I has been using this thing to cut up every piece of food that we have been eating this entire week.

Love love this knife. I stropped it with 1500 then 2000, and then gray compound and finished with green compound. Razor sharp. Shreds hair!!

Lucky you!

Great looking knife you got. I have a Alan Davis knife and I love it too.

Alan's folders are gorgeous and a real contribution to the Custom KnifeMakers Forum. I called him on the phone several yrs ago, when he was still fairly new in the "folder" business, and we had a nice conversation. He is so friendly and a real gentleman. I didn't have the money or order one then, and am still waiting.
However, several yrs ago, I purchased Alan's fixed blade due to the beauty of its design, blade-steel and wood handle burl.

p.s. I believe that Alan or his father also made the wonderful custom sheath which fits so well.
