First a little background. I haven't been posting here long but in the time I've been active, I've admitted to generally not being a Spyderco fan. I've bought a bunch of them (Sage 1, Sage 2, Chapparal, PM2, etc.) and only kept the PM2 because the others just didn't do it for me. I also admitted to not liking the appearance the forum's generally most-praised current Spyderco folder, the Brad Southard model here.

So, my wife told me a few days ago not to bring in any mail/packages, that she was expecting something "for me".

Fast forward to tonight. My wife looks upset, so I ask her what's going on. She tells me that she bought something for me, for a Valentine's day gift, but that it came and she doesn't want to give it to me. She opened it, and thinks it's just too ugly. I assure her I'll love anything she bought for me, and that she shouldn't worry about it. She decided just to give it to me now, even though she thinks it's fugly in person.

This was what my wife, who isn't into knives, bought for me out of the blue, only to decide it was too ugly to give to me--to the point that she was visibly upset by having bought something so ugly:

Again, for perspective I have always said that this was one fugly-ass knife. From the dirt colored sandpaper grip to the pointless hole in the blade, it just isn't my favorite knife for looks.

How my beloved wife, who again is totally not into knives, found her way to picking the Southard I'm not quite sure.

Of course, fugly or not this is now my new favorite knife (don't tell my wife, I still think it's on the ugly side and the hole is pretty silly for this knife). I told her only that I love it, and thanked her for being wonderful. It feels like a really well engineered knife as I play with it, and I'm hoping its appearance will grow on me over time.

So I'm not a Spyderco fanboy just yet, but I'll be carrying a Southard a lot. In my opinion, if your wife starts buying you sharp and pointy things you should encourage that behavior at all costs ;)

I'll take it if you don't want it. :D

You have a great wife. That's a lot of money for a non-knife person to spend on a knife.

Very nice.
Flick it out with the hole from time to time, it's not completely useless.
Dye the scale or get a new one made. =]

It has an awesome steel and a great shape to it.
Enjoy it.

You'll be joining the Spyder-Side before too long.

I might disagree with your tests in knives I approve of your taste in wife's.

No doubt. She sounds like an awesome lady.

I don't find that knife fugly at all, but everyone has their own tastes. Just carry it and use it frequently and I bet you'll grow to love it.

I think I'll keep it ;)

That's a keeper...the wife and the knife.

After fourteen years of marriage, I love her more now than ever (and that has nothing to do with any knife). But yeah, I'll keep 'em both ;)

I'm not sold on the hole, especially on a flipper. That said, at least it's in the middle and doesn't have the hump. I'm pretty sure even after I learn to love this Southard, I'll still pine for Benchmade axis lock knives.

I did just say in another thread the other day that Sal and company seemed like really good folks and that I wished I could give them more business, but I just didn't dig their stuff . . . guess that problem is worked out now ;)

Actually, it's kind of funny that in the end her taste was similar to mine. When it showed up she was really upset at how ugly it was.

Keep in mind that Spydercos are designed to be seen by the hand and not by the eye. :)

Ok, I admit it feels pretty nice, so you've got me there.

Yup, I'll learn to love it if it kills me. It's the thought that counts, and this is a pretty damn nice thought for her to have had for me.

I like the Southard a lot, but my wife probably wouldn't buy me one. Well, maybe..

We're flip flopped - You don't like very many Spyderco's and love Benchmade Knives.

Either way, you've got an awesome knife. =]
Tell us how you like it more after you carry it and use it.

A knife can seem so horrible to you at first, but once in hand and being carried/used/loved, it grows on you and quickly becomes one you're in love with. =]

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I find the axis lock sturdy and pleasant to use, along with being incredibly quick and easy to open. Also, I favor knives that don't eat up too much pocket space, and the 707/940/710 all seem to give me a ton of blade for the amount of space they take up.

Yup, even if it's quite bulky compared to the Benchmade I'd normally carry in its place (the 940), the Southard is extremely well put together, as far as I can tell. This thing reeks of quality design and craftsmanship. Also, I've always loved unassisted flippers (like the toothpick Ken Onion Ripple/Eros models from CRKT). The Southard is growing on me already.

And if I had to pretend to like it, this would be a lot easier to do it for than an ugly sweater knitted by grandma. I think it will work out just fine :)

I can do without spyderco's but that one is the coolest.
I would covet any knife my wife or sons bought me!

Thats an awesome read, thanks for posting man!

Sounds like a keeper ;)

Congratulations! My wife buys me knives but only after hearing exactly which ones I want. She's a little timid picking one out on her own. What a surprise and treat it must have been to receive one that she chose on herself -- and such a new and popular design. Very, very cool!

I, like others, really hope the utility and comfort eventually win you over. Spyderco knives are, to me, a lot like Moxie: you know why other folks can't stand it, but you yourself just can't get enough of the stuff!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds alternative opening methods on a flipper useless and unnecessary.

The only exception to that is if the thumbstuds are used as blade stops.

I'll bet that knife becomes one of your most prized possessions being gifted from your thoughtful wife.
