My amazing wife & my new weirdest knife story

Cracked me up! I'm in the same boat as you. Spydercos are great knives, don't get me wrong, but thats just a face only a mother could love.

The hole is great if you want to open it slowly instead of flicking it open. I steered away from Spydercos many years ago for aesthetics sake and gave away my Police, Dragonfly, and Enduras to my EMT buddies. When I acquired a Ti Military a few years back, ergos and function brought me back to Spydercos, especially when I had to learn to use my left hand to open them. The Southard is my next Spyderco.

What a surprise and treat it must have been to receive one that she chose on herself -- and such a new and popular design. Very, very cool!

Yes, I was quite surprised and touched by her effort to go out and pick this on her own for me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds alternative opening methods on a flipper useless and unnecessary.

The only exception to that is if the thumbstuds are used as blade stops.

I think it's sort of silly on a flipper, but I guess some folks like having both options. At least with a non-assisted flipper, if you're thumbing it open it doesn't jump.

I'll bet that knife becomes one of your most prized possessions being gifted from your thoughtful wife.

It already is. Why oh why does it have to be brown, though? ;)

I think I may have to look into take BladeChick's advice and dye the scales (well, scale and little round bit) at some point.

Great wife :)

Indeed :)

Yup, carried it today and I'll admit it's a really nice knife. Still ugly though . . .

Well, I can't knock it for function really. The fit and finish is perfect, it's centered, solid lockup, flips smooth and easy . . . I see why folks like it.

I have almost the exact same views as you on Spyderco and the Southard.

I really don't like most of Spyderco's designs, but there are a few that stand out, like the Paramilitary, Dragonfly, Endura, that I do like.
I've gotten the chance to handle my buddy's Southard, and thought it felt amazing, Ergonomic (Duh), solid, smooth, etc.
But boy is it Ugly. :D

The fugly duckling of my knife drawer has grown on me already. It's really very nice to handle. It has weird feel to it, in that it's big and chunky compared to my usual carry at that length (the 940) but somehow light and sturdy feeling at the same time. It flips really smoothly, and I love unassisted flippers in general. I wish the G10 wasn't a color that you might find in a baby's diaper, and I wish it didn't have the hole, but with my eyes closed it feels beautiful at least ;)

That's kind of how I feel about most Spydercos, but I still like 'em...in fact, most of my favourite knives all had an extra helping of the ugly stick. :D

I held the Southard at a knife store for like 10 minutes but after holding big flippers like my ZT301 it was just too light in my hands, there is no doubt that it is a great knife just not the knife for me

That's sort of an apples to oranges comparison though, the 301 is a tank. I was actually surprised by how light the Southard is, but it feels solid. Totally not a monster like the ZT 301, though. That said, it would be tough to move ZT 301 from a jeans pocket to a dress pant pocket, whereas the Southard can get away with it (at least mine can now that it's been slimmed down and prettied up with LSCF scale work).

yeh I do not edc my ZT 301 unless i need a big knife for work or chores but the southard would be a great edc flipper

That's a great story and an awesome gift. You should tell you wife how awesome that gift is, and that despite its looks that is a great knife.

Many Spydercos are made for function and not for looks. But I like to say that "beauty is as beauty does", so they are beautiful after all.

Many years ago my wife bought me a Benchmade Leopard, with no hints or prompting from me. This year I put a Spyderco Gayle Bradley on my list of Christmas suggestions and she bought that one for me.
