My American Kestral Falcon

Wow! Beautiful! I used to see a lot of small birds of prey when I lived in East Tennessee but tend to see bigger hawks and eagles here in the midwest.

Hey Guys..

TJ...

Awesome pictures....

Years ago when I was younger I worked for an animal rescue, and helped raise a dozen or more Kestral Hawks.. Very cool little birds..

My job was feeding them, which required cutting up dead mice with EMT shears, or beef heart into little cubes...

A few of the birds were long time residents, with either broken wings, missing wings, and assortment of things really...

A couple of the birds were tame enough over the years that you could hand feed them while they sat on a gloved hand.. That was alot of fun watching them slurp down mouse guts, or watch them tear into a mouse... Beaks are Wicked pointy and talons well.......

My other job from feeding them was to clean out their cages...

One day, while taking one bird out of the cage, sometimes a cage held more than one, I was fiddling around with the cage door ,Kestral Hawk in one hand, lock in the other working with my hands close together, the Kestral reached out and latched onto the tip of my finger...

Well I'll tell you, short of being clawed by a cat,, I've never felt more pain inflicted by an animal...

So now I'm downstairs in the basement, with at least 3 closed doors between me and upstairs... I had to let the bird go so I could open the door...

As soon as I did, he latched onto the finger with the other talon. Now I've got a Kestral stuck to my finger and two more doors to go... When I made sudden movements, like moving fast,, the bird would dig deeper and hang on for dear life.

I made it upstairs and everyone starts laughing. The lady in charge says. "I told you to keep your fingers away from it's feet !" and then pryed the bird off of me...

The Talons on these birds are as sharp as a cat's and about twice as long,, and they have excellent dexterity...

I learned my lesson, and always wore gloves when handling them from then on.

Anyway,, just thought you'd find that funny...

Lucky for you it wasn't an eagle. I was told of an 80 lb german shepherd that attacked a falconer's eagle. The dog died very quickly with a talon through it's heart !!!

Hey Guys..

Mete..

Yaa no kidding..They have one or two Bald Eagles there now..

As a matter of fact,, the same lady who pryed the Kestral from my finger had the same thing happen to her with a Snowy Owl..

They had to chemically knock the bird out to remove the talons from her arm
The Talons on that bird come into the range of a Lion's claw...

Not fun either way....
