my attempt at a hobo stove!!!

That's cool. I must make one of those.

Nice set up! Ive built 4 stoves in the past couple weeks..Just toying with differant set ups. My favorite so far is one I built out of a screw top tin from specialty bottle.

here it is- http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=227

It actually burns longer with an oz of HEET then my pepsi cans Ive built. Just unscrew the top, fill, replace and go! Ive been using high temp silicone to seal, and havent had a issue yet. They work nicely... Do you cover your cup with anything? Nice pot stand too!!

Very nice!!!
I love these stoves. I just built one and got a 3:10 boil time for 16oz of water. Although I haven't figured out a windscreen/stand system yet

You get boil times like that out of a GSI cup bro? How? Mine always seem to take 6-7 min to boil. Id really like to get a speedier boil time from mine. Do you use a wick in it?

Anyone experimenting with these needs to do research first.
Using a sealant is fine (but not really necessary), these stoves run on pressure.
If you dont have enough holes they can blow apart scattering flaming alcohol about. Too many holes and too big of holes and it wont work at all, not enough pressure. The balance seems to be many very small holes.
If you dont have enough holes and the halves are sealed then the pressure gets way too high before blowing apart, very dangerous.

You can build the stove fill it full then let it burn completely out.
Do this outside. If it survives then seal the halves together.
THEN REPEAT! The excess gas may have escaped through the unsealed seams the first time.

Just be safe.

I would prefer to buy the Vargo titanium, its about the same size and engineered for this. Yes it cost more than an empty can, but it cost less than an ER visit.

do you have pics of the one you made???

I have a couple of tins (screw top tins) from my pellets... i used one of those and put holes on the top but the vapor would escape from the sides after a couple burns... as if the heat expanded the tin can... do you seal these???

And what i am using for my pot stand now is the bottom of one of these screw top tin cans... :D

EDIT: I don't cover the cup with anything yet... i am looking for something to cover it with... this should decrease boil times

boil times with these stoves are good!!!

i'll see if i can make a video of my stove working and then you can time it... :D :D :D

You know... you are right... i should have tested this outside... sometimes you are not really aware of the consequences of some of your actions...

i did follow the instructions on the Zen stoves site and have a total of 24 holes... smaller than a pin size...

thanks for your comment... really appreciated...

Yeah, I used 32 holes in mine and used as small a sewing needle that could survive, although I think i went through 2 or 3 for my stove. I actually did video tape my boil time, using a digital thermometer, unfortunately I didn't have enough room on my compute so I threw it out.
I'll video tape it again and post it. I'm actually gonna build a bunch here in a couple weeks, I'll send you one.

Like the op I followed the zen stoves directions.
P.s. It actually beat my pocket rocket by one second...

Thanks man, that would be awesome!

Id like to try out one of yours and see what you are doing differantly, or similarly if that makes sense.

Great stove and a very informative article. Thanks for sharing the information

i am glad you liked my stove setup... i'll take more pics when I go on our survival hiking... maybe i'll get to warm some tea :D :D :D
