My attempt at Boss Jack scales

My boss jack become a project knife since the day I bought it. It started life as black blade with pumpkin scales, CG model. I stripped it and polished right away. Once the scales were off for stripping and polishing, I got the idea to attempt some custom scales. The two sets of scales you see are bone linen micarta and a "true" black canvas or toxic green G10 liners. I know they're not perfect. My fit and finish still needs works. I did everything by hand with a set of files and rasps. The black scales are quite beefy. They're about as wide as some of Busse's hand shaped magnums. I still need to recess the fasteners a little more into the scales. On the bone linen, you can see spaces around the fasteners, so... Contructive (or not so constuctive) criticism is welcome. :)

They're super comfortable in their own respect, although I think I like the fatties better. With the finger grooves, my hand is filled and locked in there. I've tried a few grip positions and the grooves work well. The thin bones scales are a lot quicker though. They both change the feel of the knife.

either those are "bone micarta" which is a real thing, or he is using some sort of animal bone scale... i'd bet it is micarta

I dig the black and green. Really looks like it would lock in your hand!

and this is why it's good to have a wide array of choices. To me they just look bumpy and uncomfortable. I don't like finger grooves. I dig the other one though

The next set I have is Jade G10. Really sweet. You can see light through them. Once the'ye polished it should look amazing. I'm gonna copy the factory scales for those though, and just make em thin with a rope pattern across them.

I like the shape of the bone mircarta with the colors of the green and black. I looking forward to seeing the jade green. I saw a custom not to long ago in jade green and I would like to do a set in jade green and wood. Nice work.

Thanks. I might take the black down a bit more once I recess the screws. I'd like to try a few more with liners and multiple colors, but I think I'll start with a thinner outer scale next time.

I don't hang around these parts much anymore but I have waited a real long time to see this. Congrats on your work so far. I really like how you challenged yourself with all the contouring. Now when you make the final Jade set it should be a piece of cake. I look forward to seeing your end result and the knife all cleaned up.

Great job, I think you could have a career as a pimper with some honing of those skills! Way to go, it's way more than I could ever dream of doing!

Thanks a lot bro. It has been a while. I think I've had the materials for at least a year now. When I finish the last set I'll be sure to sh.oot you a PM or something

Thanks. Yeah, like I said, my fit and finish isn't perfect. I didn't mind if I scuffed the tang or if the two sides weren't perfectly symmetrical this go around, but those are things I'll work on in the future.

did you model the fingers to your own hand? how many iterations did it take?

Id love to make some scales too but until I find some access to a drill press its really just a daydream like the armor I want to forge.
