My Aviator....does it have collector's value??

Hello all,

I have an Aviator I bought back in 1989 or 1990. It is numbered #761 and has "Made in South Africa" stamped on the opposite side. It has never been carried, used, sharpend, and has very seldom even left my safe since I've owned it. I bought it at the Soldier of Forutune Convention in Las Vegas in 1989 (or 1990), I remember thinking "what a cool knife" and had to buy it.

So yesterday I took it out fo the safe to admire it and started wondering what it is worth or how rare one is since this one was made in South Africa? I thought I'd share the pics with everyone here and look forward to your comments. Enjoy the pics!

Thanks and take care,

Steve

Hi Steve,
I have the same South African CR Aviator except mine is serial #586. I bought it at a knife show in 1986. There's not much collector value in them unless of course you ran into someone that specifically wanted South African made CR's. I've used mine for years and it's a great knife. I like the hex butt caps much better than the newer rounder ones. My advice would be to use it and enjoy it or find someone interested in a S.A. made version.

There is certainly added value in the fact that the knife is made in South Africa, although, as Gene says, it really only has value to a person to whom that facet of the knife is important. Made in S A knives have sold at 30% around more than current retail. I have to say that the Aviator is not all that rare, it is a model that we still make but it does have collector value.

Thank you Anne for the info. I was aware that certain S.A. made Reeve's were desirable. I didn't think the Aviators were because so many of them were and are being produced. Maybe Steve should keep his pristine and the value will escalate some day. I sure have enjoyed using mine and I have to admit it does exude a little bit of "exclusivity" since it was made in your homeland.
