I was complaining about I cannot provide any sheath for my knife orders, first I don't know how to do, second I couldn't find any good resources for leather. I guess I bored my girl friend with these complaints, she brought me these as a gift. :D

Leather is water buffalo hide, she said it is half buffalo. It is so soft but at the same time so strong. When she was young she made hundreds of purses and bags out of leather with her dad. previous week she went to her hometown, found the supplier she knew about 20 years ago. The supplier suggested that this particular leather is what he also uses for sheaths, he says there is no better novice leather type better than this one. We'll see.

She gave the books as a bday present... Oh I'm soooo happy. Now beware, Emre Kipmen Knives with sheaths from now on :D

I guess she loves me, don't you think so....

Good for you Emre. Isn't it great having a woman who supports your knifemaking? My wife has been great about encouraging and putting up with me. Two years ago she bought me an anvil for Christmas. How cool is that?
Congratulations!
Ed

The leather looks very nice. i was having problems finding leather with a small grain (fibers) my suppler just got in some really nice horse hide that im going to try out next

Congratulations Emre and Happy Birthday!! :)
You've got a good one there. You'd better treat her right when her birthday comes.

Yes, Happy Birthday Emre! Your posts are a pleasure also. Congratulations on your great gift and the gift of a supporting girlfriend. Given that she has a lot of experience working leather, possibly she could give you some ideas how to get started. There are other famous knife makers whose girlfriends make their sheaths, too - you never know, she might "catch the bug" and start working with you!

Happy Birthday! What a thoughtful gift.

Since no one asked. . . How excited would your girl friend be about making sheaths? Sounds like a match made in heaven to me!

BTW I think the Al Stohlman books on case making and hand stitching are pretty incredible. There are directions for making knife sheaths, of course. I think they are a great resource and helped me to progress more quickly without having to learn (as much) from my mistakes. :D

It would be dream team yes of course, thanks guys, it is one of the best b-days. But I'm alone on this leather work thing. She made clothes, purses etc in her early days just because she had to, these activities are reminding her worst days of her life, she earned a hard living for education and to take care of her poor family. At the same time she worked at factories also. When we talk about her youth she always mention these hard times in melancholy. Now she is a very successful landscape architect and doesnt want to look back I suppose, she had a crowd family but now she is all alone, no one is alive. She bought me these toys just to make me happy and I'm sure it hurts inside, to go back to her hometown and see the people from the past. Thats make these gifts much more valuable for me, just priceless. I know she is somewhat not happy as I am because I choose not to be a successful IT manager or an archaeologist, my way is the hardest path I could choose and I guess this handcraft activities are just her ugly, tiring past...
