my backpacking fixed blade "kit"

I finally settled on a knife for backpacking, it's a Landi PSK w/ thin scales- I wanted a fixed blade as I recently went to dual fuel stove- one of the fuels being wood :)

I wanted something light, but still stout enough for light batoning/splitting duties- the PSK utilizes a flat grind w/ 1/8" stock (1095)- so it should hold up just fine. I also wanted something w/ a decent size grip- I saw several nice knives that fit the bill, but most were lacking in the grip department- the Landi is not lacking.

The knife will be carried around my neck, I use 2.5 mm Spetra line- it has a 250 # test w/ a braided sheath. I don't want it to strangle me so I utilized a small plastic piece that came off an old glove so it will break given sufficient force (much less than 250 # :)). The sheath is wrapped w/ 15' of the Spectra- more than enough to erect a debris shelter. Within the sheath is a 3/16 x 2.5" firesteel- I have a couple of these smaller firesteels and the Landi's squared blade top does a good job of making sparks.

A Fox 40 Micro whistle and Photon light are added to the neck lanyard.

I made a wrist lanyard w/ a double hole cord lock, this allows me to lock the knife into the sheath w/ no chance of it coming out- the kydex sheath snaps in nicely, but didn't want any chance of the knife coming out. The wrist lanyard also keeps the whistle and light from clacking about.

The whole kit and kaboodle weighs in at a svelte 4.7 oz

Landi PSK 2.7 oz
kydex sheath 0.6 oz
firesteel 0.3 oz
15' Spectra 0.6 oz (includes cord lock)
Photo light 0.3 oz
whistle 0.2 oz

Handy looking little knife. Loosing it in the woods shouldn't be an issue...unless of course you're hiking through a poinsettia field :)

Nice set up, I like the knife, I'll have to check them out, I've never liked things hanging around my neck though.

I like that knife and your setup!! Now all you need is some orange 550 paracord to replace that black stuff! It is available! ;)

thanks gents :)

I've got some orange Spectra- I thought it might be a bit much on the orange, maybe not :)

stove is homemade, started as a windscreen (Ti) for a small Esbit stove (which it still is), but made it adaptable to burn wood as well- just add two stakes (which I have anyways)- it works pretty darn good I'm pleased to say

I got a Landi like that in a trade awhile ago. I really like it, especially the decent-sized handle. I keep mine with a Vic Spirit in a KSF Adirondack pocket sheath.

The orange ones are the sharpest.;)

made one small tweak, the wrist lanyard does a great job of insuring the knife stays in, but didn't do such a great job of quieting the whistle/light- a small ranger band to the rescue and all is quiet :D
