Ok, so I recently purchased a Benchmade mini crooked rivers and for some odd reason the wood smells sorta like fertilizer. Could someone check with their mini crooked river and let me know if it’s normal and could this be because I got it wet?

It also has some vertical play, no side to side and is really smooth

Update: the smell is gone, but I’m still concerned about the vertical play the previous benchmades (griptilian, 940) i’ve owned have had no vertical play but some side to side... does the vertical play make it less safe to use?

No, and more than likely after it wears in a bit the vertical play will be gone. I've had a few that came with a little bit of vertical play and they wore in pretty quickly.
My Super Freek has a little bit still, but I have no concern considering I carry it regularly and use it a lot.

I believe it’s the omega springs because the detent of the axis lock won’t even close the knife, I have to push it in. If this is the case how would I fix it

If it's defective, send it back.

How tight is the pivot? I had to loosen the pivot on mine a little to get it to close like it should. But of tuning and break in, no big deal.

To Benchmade or to bass pro(where I purchased from) I don’t want to because it’s sold out almost everywhere and sending it back and waiting another week or so to get it just isn’t what I wanna do(due to fed ex’s crappy delivery)...

what made the stink go away? ya caught my attention.
It didn’t exactly go away completely , but it doesn’t smell as potent anymore, I have to be really close and inhale really hard to smell it...

PS: I also wiped it with alcohol because I heard wood tends to have bacteria in it that causes these types of smells

First, most wood is naturally anti-bacterial, but that "wood" won't inherently grow bacteria.

Second, that's not real wood, per se. It's an engineered wood product; basically a high-quality plywood that is then impregnated with resin to "stabilize" it, making it fairly water resistant, and more durable.

You could be smelling the resin (odd, it shouldn't smell), or something that was used to clean it. That would be unusual, but possible.

You say you purchased at Bass Pro... how sure are you that it's not a counterfeit? Cabela's and BP are known to unintentionally sell fakes. The scam is a person goes in, buys the real thing. Takes it home, swaps it with a fake, then returns it to the store and says they changed their mind. The store doesn't know any better, and re-sells the Counterfeit knife as a legit Benchmade. We've had reports here in the past of this happening.

Might want to do a bit of research, be sure it's the real deal...

I’m almost completely certain, because
1. it came in a sealed box (no way of opening it without removing or cutting sticker)
2. Parkerized clip
3. Blade grind and finish match my 940’s
4. A lot of MCR owners also have the same problems

I still always have this thought in my head though whenever I buy a new knife that someone did return a fake. I usually buy from blade hw but they were sold out

The box also comes with benchmades foam that no Chinese knock off has... idk maybe someone removed the sticker put in a fake and then resealed it.

Maybe I could send some pictures over in the morning and have people take a look

You probably smelled the chemicals used in production. However, I would still send the knife back. A knife like that is supposed to be a long term companion. What is another week?

I discovered the more and more I use it the less vertical play I have. I think i just have to use it for a few days and if nothing changes, return it. Thank you guys for you’re help and I’m still open to any ideas or suggestions you guys have.
