First, most wood is naturally anti-bacterial, but that "wood" won't inherently grow bacteria.
Second, that's not real wood, per se. It's an engineered wood product; basically a high-quality plywood that is then impregnated with resin to "stabilize" it, making it fairly water resistant, and more durable.
You could be smelling the resin (odd, it shouldn't smell), or something that was used to clean it. That would be unusual, but possible.
You say you purchased at Bass Pro... how sure are you that it's not a counterfeit? Cabela's and BP are known to unintentionally sell fakes. The scam is a person goes in, buys the real thing. Takes it home, swaps it with a fake, then returns it to the store and says they changed their mind. The store doesn't know any better, and re-sells the Counterfeit knife as a legit Benchmade. We've had reports here in the past of this happening.
Might want to do a bit of research, be sure it's the real deal...
